thinking about buying

im looking for a 99-03 CC LB 7.3 auto 4x4. is there anything i should look out for. alot of the trucks around here are higher mileage around 200k and about 10k it seems.

i know you dont want to hear this but i will probably put a cummins in it in a year or two but i dont want to have to put alot of money into the 7.3 to keep it running. how many miles should i look at before they are to high?

putting a cummins in there cost a lot of money, a lot cheaper to just keep up the 7.3 it will takes years before you pay for the conversion.

Bad bad bad
wups sorry, did I say that out loud.
I thought I would want to swap a cummins into my truck as well but after I owned the psd, I really had no need of it.

I will suggest though, if you are dead set on a cummins swap, just buy any superduty. You do not need to start with a psd truck. Just buy the dodge trans or a rebuilt psd trans to do the swap with. You can get a mint v10 or 5.4 truck super cheap compared to a psd truck. Don't limit yourself on what truck you buy. I was going to use the 12v and dodge trans as a complete unit, and buy the trans controller. Very easy swap really, and cheap if you are resourceful.

Probly need to spend a bunch of money on the 7.3 to mod it enough to get an idea of how it really performs. I hated my 7.3 until I had the chip. In stock form they are trash. No like for them at all unless geared like 488 or something.
I like my truck chipped or programmed. So at a minimum you need that.

I know the 7.3 in stock form isn't fast, but 'trash'?? Seriously? Did we somehow get a thread here from the 'Nation? Anyway...

jtharvey did a cummins swap after he blew up his 7.3. Others that want/need high horsepower for pulling/racing/bragging rights go with a cummins because (relatively speaking) they're 'cheap' to get big numbers from.

If you're like me and don't look at an 8,000lb vehicle as a racecar, but want an incredibly reliable, proven powerplant in an awesome truck, then a 7.3 is a great choice. With some mods (gauges, intake, exhaust, then chip, in that order) she'll be more fun to drive.

If you really want to race, you'll drop BIG $$ in to any diesel, cummins or PSD. What gives the Dodge & Chevy boys the biggest advantage is weight. Ford's tend to weigh in around 1,000lbs heavier than a comparably equipped Dodge or Chevy, and that affects performance a good bit.

Seriously my 95 ford 460efi would outpull my 2000 psd anyday, better throttle responce and you didnt have to "run" hills. Granted the psd gets way better mpg, and when you mod the psd it dont lower the mpg. After the 400 dollar bullydog programmer and the 50hp setting, the psd would probably pull a little better then the 460 truck and had just as good throttle responce (with the 120 setting it was awesome but egt would skyrocket but the 75hp setting was perfect temps towing)

naw i think what gives them the advantage is common rail fuel delivery or just not usin the heui system. oh and my truck will have a cummins in it after i get out of the army and become a contractor. 1000 horse dd

Then your PSD has issues. My old F250 extra cab 4x4 couldn't hold a candle to my 99 PSD in pulling power and throttle response when pulling, even when it was stock. Not even remotely close.

MatJ- 10k for a 99 with about 200k miles is fair dinkum IMO. I just sold my 99 F250 crew cab short box for that price- intake, exhaust, gauges, and a DP Tuner. I had it sold in 2 days. 195k miles on the ticker.

Nope, just had areally good 460.
Right now with the dp tuner its well above the 460. I really liked my 460 when i was towing a lot, and stock psd just couldnt make me happy. Now that i got rid of the bullydog and have the 60t and 80e, I really enjoy the psd. I frequently take my truck instead of the mustang gt i have because the 120r tune is sweet.
All I meant bythe comment was stock for stock id take a 460 over the psd. My 2000 psd f350 has been a strong runner since I bought it, It just needed a little extra for me to be happy.

Mine was a good runner too, 15mpg empty. No way in heck would it outpull my old PSD though. Like I say, if yours outpulled your PSD, your PSD is sick.

460 is a good mill but it was a passenger car engine designed during the oil crisis. A stock 460 was lucky to see 250HP.

Not knocking the 460 as its a solid motor but it the 7.3 is a commercial motor that has seen its ways into 60,000GVW applications.

I will admit my 7.3 isn't breaking any speed records.

If you are going to do the cummins swap, just get a tired old 5.4 f250.
