Resonator?

Dumb Question. What purpose does the resonator on the 92-96 f150 serve? Got A 5.0 F150. The peice that the downpipes from the engine feed into.

It's not a resonator it actually the first cat, but like any cavity in the exhaust system it does also help control sound.
