OK, so ive been playin with this motor tryin to get it running. the cam timing is right. I have the crank at TC and the cam at the marks on the piece behind the timing cover. im getting fuel, turn the key on, and pump turns on. I know its dangerous, but id pull the plugs, have my wife crank the motor, and fire would come out of the holes. but now ive noticed one of the coil packs isnt getting power. im not sure if the crankshaft positioning sensor is good or notand it looks difficult to replace. should that be my next step? ive spent quite a bit of money so ar and im in desperate need to get this truck going. any ideas to help me out????
Good grief, how did you go from one of the coil packs not getting B+, to needing an engine????!!!!
I later learned that the coil pack was ok, i found that the coil for the driverside plugs dosnt turn on till the motor is running. i did a cmompression test, and found zero compression on the #4 cylinder. not sure if its a valve or rings or what, so im gonna replace the whole motor. id rather know the motor is good, than question how long it will last.

Even bad or broken rings will get you some compression so unless you have a hole in the piston the bottom end should be ok. Maybe just a stuck valve. I'll take the valve cover off and have a looksee before looking for a new engine.
ok, so i probably look like a big F@%king idiot right now, but i pulled the valve cover, and found 2 exhaust rocker arms had fallen off, and the #4 intake rocker arm had fallen off and wedged between the spring and the camshaft support. All 8 rocker arms are missing their "retainer springs" so i am now on the hunt for new retainer springs, and im gonna cross my fingers that the lobes on the cam are ok, all the valves and springs seem to be compressing and decompressing fine without any slack. i dont see and evidence of the vales binding, but tommorow, im gonna have my wife crank the motor so i can see if the "camshaft lube tubes" are still working, and to make sure the rockers dont want to jump around anymore.
it has hydraulic lifters with roller rockers. to my eye, there is no way to adjust them... im gonna post some pictures as soon as i can, cause now im having a hell of a time finding the rocker arm keeper springs... im wondering if my truck even came with them....
I would just buy a used cylinder head at a salvage yard or ebay and either put the head on or remove the parts from it and use it on your current cylinder head
OR, ill buy the 2.3 motor, trans, drive shaft, and rear end out of a '92 mustang with only 72k on them, for only $100 and just swap motors and sell the other parts.
Dude I don't know where you lucked into a deal like that but I would go for it, and with the money from selling the other parts you could probably rebuild your original 2.3 and have a spare motor or slowly build it into a performance motor as a project. Although being a 2.3 it's not exactly a motor for building unless you turbo it, but I always enjoy seeing the little motors beefed up a bit.

i think what i would do is over time built up the motor i have now little by little and maybe later put it in a dune buggy or somethin...

So how in the world do you suppose this engine came to be unraveled like this????
Had someone been in there messing around with the top end????
whitefordexplorer: I see you're from Beaumont. Did you buy your truck from Ramsey Street Ford in Banning? Too bad they went out of business.
