390 flywheel on a 360?

That aside, yes, it's been done before (by me!). I had a 289 I just rebuilt for another project and had my 302 in my '82 LTD wagon go out. I had a normal 289 auto flexplate. I wanted to hook it up to the tranny in the LTD and the flexplate was the wrong bolt pattern (wanted to say "pinout") and diameter. The flexplate from the 302 (externally balanced) had this big ugly weight on it.
The 289 had already been balanced with the 289 flexplate. I talked my machinist (who was also a heavy tooling salesman) into taking another 289 crank I had, and balance it with the 289 flexplate (again). Then, put the 302 flexplate on it and drill out the weight until it was balanced. I then used the resulting 302 flexplate on the 289 and the balance was perfect!
Sorry about the small-block Ford reference
