van turbo???

Why do people put a van turbo on there 7.3L ?? I am just wondering if it really helps I have the big ball buster turbo. But I would still like to know why people do it.

Joe is making 450 hp with his van turbo. Don't cut them short. I'm sure he will chime in here.

i think the biggest advantage is the larger than stock compressor and exhaust housings

non wastegated is nice but u can tighten the rod up so its not an issue
i mean even the gtp38r is wastegated

Van turbo flows more air than the stocker. The van is non intercooled and uses a larger turbo to reduce egts, so it does the same for the truck especially when you are pushing more fuel with tuning and injectors.

I don't think it flows more air than stock -- it just lets you use the upper end of your power band without EGTs skyrocketing because the little .84 stock exh housing becomes a restriction on the top end. I have mine configured with the stock wheel & ported ATS compressor housing. The jury is out about how it flows compared to stock, but as hard as I'm pushing it (35ish psi), there is no trace of surge, and my exhaust back pressure is about 1:1 with boost which is where you want to be.

At least. Ryan-Strokersace had some kind of stage 2s and was making 430ish. I think they were 200cc stage 2s though (stage 2.5s??).

I'm also trying to learn this. Joe, is the ATS ported housing you have different than what would go on a stock turbo? Also is the exhaust A/R size standard on the vans?

The compressor housings are EXACTLY the same on the vans & trucks. The ONLY difference is the exhaust housing & wheels. Vans have a 1.15 a/r non-wastegated housing and a slightly larger exhaust wheel. Stock turbine wheel has a 76.20mm inducer and a 67.73mm exducer (79 trim). Van turbine wheel has a 76.20mm inducer and a 69.84mm exducer (84 trim).

The van exhaust housing is HUGE compared to the truck.

Thing I love about my van turbo is that it just keeps pulling! And yes, it does keep the EGT's down a good bit. Glad I finally did it, and with Clay's help!

So have you figured out why you only got 320/702, Danny? That's really low for the combo. You should be around 350...

Those numbers are with my e99 turbo! I haven't dynoed this combo yet, but to be honest my injectors are running like crap, so even if I did dyno it now, it wouldn't show it's true potential. I gotta lead on a set of used Casserly stage 2's. I'd like your hybrids, but i think the 2's wil be plenty enough power till I get a backup truck LOL.
