Have a 2006 expo. Has 167 000 on it and has a howling/ whining that starts at just past 35 km/h not sure what it is in mph. anyways after 60km/h road noise kills it out, its nothing really loud but its a little anoying.
have took it into the dealership and had a lookover and estimate.
First they said it was tires, then wheel bearings, then misalignment.
but i had them put it up on a hoist and then using the hydralic jack, lifted the tires off the ramps. the howling continued ruling out tires and misalignment. then they took it out of Auto 4x4 into 2wd. still howled ruling out wheel bearings. But they discovered my transfercase wasn't disengaging. Probably the cause of the problem causing that noise.
So they said they would have to rebook me in later. thats after 3 hours of screwing around. luckily they never charged me for it.
So I think it is mabey the driveshaft u-joint, pinion bearing, crown & pinion alignment, spider gears, or mabey bent axleshaft. or bad c-v joint.
I know the transfercase isnt disengaging due to bad sendor unit or shifting motor.
What do you guys think could be making the noise?
A bad u-joint will clunk or squeak, not howl. A howling noise 99.9% of the time is a bearing. From your description I'd say it's a pinion bearing issue in the front differential.
