I have had an idea that I would like to get some feedback on: I am wanting to convert a 66 Custom Cab LWB 2x4 into a 4wd using the IFS from a 80-96 F-150. Has anybody done this? Here are my particular questions:
1) I understand that the frame width for the '66 is 34", how does this compare to the 80-96?
2) How does the track width compare between the 66 and 80-96's?
Nathan, Find the truck that you want to use, and look at putting the 66 sheetmetal on on it. You can be better assured of fit if you don't go past 79 since they are in the same series.
I just set a 66 over on to a 71 frame. the cab fit fine and I had to drill 2 new holes for the bed. They were both 2wd but they say the frames were the same 66 to 73. there close but apperantly some bed holes are nessary to redrill
Thank you both for the responses. However, judging from them, I don't think I made myself clear enough. I am NOT intending on swaping the frames, although I understand that one from a 65-79 model would work. Anyway, I am rather wanting to graft the independant 4x4 front suspension off of an 80's model F-150 to the stock 66 frame rails. I know that it will require some cutting and welding (or hopefully driling and bolting), but I am interested in seeing if anybody else has tried this, and if so, what problems they encountered. . .
Nathan, You made yourself clear. If you intend on using the engine, tranny etc. from the newer truck put the sheet metal on the newer chassis. Very well could be less work.
