Hi Guys and Gals,
I'm looking for advice on a problem with the clutch cable quick connector on my 95 Ranger. The Ranger has 150,000 miles and I want to replace the clutch, slave cylinder and flywheel. The truck sat in the driveway for a year so everything is pretty rusted up.
The white plastic collar on the cable quick connect seems stuck. I have been attempting to use screwdrivers on opposite sides trying wiggle the collar back in the direction of the transmission in order to release the cable. The problem is that I am not getting the collar to move at all. I've been applying WD40 in hopes of freeing it up. The collar is starting to distort and that can't be a good thing. Any ideas on what I should try next? If I can't get this disconnected what are my options?
the collar should stick out alittle from the connector. Its best to push in on the hose and then while holding it in push on the collar. If you have a flat piece of metal about 1" wide then you'll need to cut out a 5/8" slot to use as a tool.
The Ranger is the 2wd, 4 cyl. Great little truck. I was considering junking it but decided it was cheaper for me to spend all winter fixing the various issue than spending cash on a new truck (something that I can't afford right now).
I'll hit the parts store this weekend and see if I can get the tool. I'm still concerned the the collar doesn't want to move
Hi All,
I got the special tool yesterday and spent hours with no success. Found a video online that said that these plastic collars can sometime get so gunked up they are very difficult to remove. I'm in that hell now.
Does anyone know if I can buy just the clutch hydraulic cable? I'm only finding complete clutch master cylinders kits.
This is getting expensive quick. I love my Ranger but damn, calling this a "quick connect" is such an tease.
George, I feel your pain. I also went through the same thing your going through. I Bought my line from the dealer but you can since your going to change the Slave cylinder and clutch and pressure plate it would be cheaper to buy the Master cylinder kit from rockautoparts
Hey Steve,
Thanks a bunch for the support. And thanks a ton for the suggestion about rockauto... I'll be checking them out shortly.
I spent the better part of the day working on the quick connect. I PB'd the crap out of it and finally got some movement. However, after getting the plastic collar pushed into the slave fitting, it still does not release. At this point the fittings are pretty cut up so I'm thinking about replacing the whole master cylinder and hydraulic line.
I really can't complain too much. I have about 150,000 miles on the original clutch. Once the repairs are complete I'm hoping to get another 20-25,000 miles before I retire it. It's been a great truck for me.
Thanks again Steve. I've been a member of this site for about 5+ years now and always get good quality help.
Take care.
Just George
