I just picked up a 1969 F100 short bed Ranger. It pretty much stock and not messed with too much. Didn't get the greatest deal, but I'm happy.
My first question lies with the three on the tree. It was all loose and sloppy and had been fixed poorly. I took it apart and bought from LMC all of the goodies that were no longer in the column or had been worn out. I had about a 3/8 gap between the upper collar and the wheel. I have not remedied that, so if you have input, it would be appreciated. My problem is that once I got it all back together, I cannot pull the lever up far enough to engage reverse or first. I don't see a way adjust where the new shift collar lands when installed. The shifter glided from point to point while still apart. Greased up well. Once tightened, the problem appeared. Not very much gap between shift collar and the upper collar. Shifting from second to third is a dream....
What do you all think? If this posted somewhere else, can you point the way?
Also, has there been a lot of luck on here putting a modern 5 speed manual in w/ floor shift and no computer? Starting the research process....
Thanks for having me!
My guess is you installed something backwards. The hole grommets should have been all that needed replacing. Do you still have all of your old parts to compare?
Which engine does your truck have in it currently? A 300 6 or 302 8 will mate to a newer OD tranny, the FE 360 will not.
BTW, if you bought a new shift tube they are different with or without power steering. Did you get the correct one? My ol' 1972 micro fische slide is hard to read right there but I think it says with p/s is 27.11" long. My 1975 slide says it is 26 3/4" long. And both say non-power steering is 28.30" long.
The gap was there when I picked up the truck. Shifted fine then but a bit loose. I took it all apart because 1)the shift handle mounting point was mangled and broken2)the horn didn't work and 3) the directionals didn't work.Cut wire in the column is fixed. Space prevents me from putting the new horn contact brush in. I'll get into it a bit tomorrow if I get the time. By the way I have a 240ci.

Welcome to FTE and congrats on your new-to-you rig. Lotsa knowledge and experience in here
"Luck" on installing a modern 5-speed manual? Ummmm. No. Luck has nothing to do with it... it's takes research, saving a few nickels and and dimes, and being determined to do it right the first time. That led me to talk to Bruce (and Paul!) at Modern Driveline.
