Hey so I'm new to this forum and also just got a new truck, a '97 F-250 LD. Its extended cab with a 4.6L auto. Looking for some tips on how to get more power out of the engine, but isn't everyone? I'm going to build a steel flatbed for it this summer I think, probably throw a plow on it too. Great forum here guys
A 4.6 in a LD is a motor having to work really hard. You can try a few things but it's a 4.6 and just is not going to produce the torque the 5.4 does. The 4.6 will rev and deliver it's power at rpm but no amount of power additions will make it similiar to a 5.4. A 5000 lb truck still weighs the same no matter which engine it has. But go ahead and try it out. It's a Ford truck and meant to be drove hard!
Yeah its only going to get a standard 7-1/2 foot plow, I'm not going to really over build the bed either to keep the weight down in that department... Its the truck in my avatar btw
problem with most things that get "more power" is that the power comes on at 3-4000 RPM... You got a truck and want low end torque-- that is motor displacement that does that. Like Dan said, a 5.4 would get you the beef.. the 4.6 is a nice highway motor, but not for lugging or plowing snow.
The plow won't be until next winter obviously, unless I get something else by then. I'm building the flatbed with a friend at his shop in May when I get done with school so its just going to be materials cost.
when you get the bed done post pics please!!! i have been kicking around the flatbed idea for my 97 and cant find any pics of these trucks with a flat bed.
Will do, I plan on having stake pockets so I can have removable sideboards for hauling my goose dekes and other stuff, and it will most likely have a cab rack attached directly to the bed via welds. Sound good for a kind of vague plan? The truck has a straight frame, its got no humps and such, so the flatbed will be real easy to build... Probably won't be until mid to late June when I have the ca$h scraped together...
that does sound like a pretty good plan. thats what i want to end up with for my tryck. it will eventually (within the next four years or so) become strictly a work truck so it will be getting things like 7700 rear springs and most likely a flat bed. there is an aluminum one that i saw that was 7x7 that i REALLY like, but it is pretty expensive.lol
