PING PING PING

I've posted this up before and I can't seem to find my problem.

2300-3000 rpms under light load, m;y truck is pinging terrible and is a gutless POS. If I floor it past this it downshifts and seems like its going to take off and be fine. It doesn't last, it pings again and litterally loses most power. I can hold the throttle steady through this and it surges slightly and then backs off. Eventually the check engine light flashes and I think that is a warning against Catelytic converter damage. Anyway, I get no codes. Plugs changed, fuel filter changed, brand new tranny. This is becoming very frustrating, I'm not liking my favorite truck. Ideas???

do you have the problems if you return the truck to stock and unplug the edge?

ahh, good point,,,I forgot to mention that I have returned it back to stock and removed the edge. When I was using it, I kept it on 2 since I tow all the time. I also increased timing slightly. What was happening with it was something different at that time. I just haven't plugged back in. I was getting a dead spot then a quick burst of power. I didn't like how it was performing.

Sounds like you may have clogged convertors. Drop the exhaust from the manifolds and drive it. If the power is better, then your cats are clogged.

I did think of that. I let that go because I thought I would have codes. I am open to give that a shot though. Thanks. Any others please send thoughts.

how old is your edge tune maybe download a current tune and try plug it back up. mine is only a few months old and i love it (mostly for the trans mods) but if you have it on maybe you can use the display w/ (timing, fuel rail press, or one of the many other choices) to try to find the problem. even if you run it in stock mode

thought I would post my end results. I decided to buy a new truck. I backed out figuring the cost of new wasn't worth it for me. I decided I would gut the inside of the hood out and buy a new engine. My mechanic asked if he could keep my truck for a day and drive it and try and find the problem before we go a new engine route. He was able to track these problems back to the fuel pump. I am seeing so many posts about pinging and poor performance issues. Maybe this might help a few of you. I know I have tried many things and through many dollars at trying to solve this thing and I never thought of the fuel pump.

might be too loud, try to get a back pressure tester that screws into the o2 sensor hole.

Kevin,
Was the fuel pump causing a lean mixture condition? Did the mechanic diagnose it based on low fuel pressure?

Yes the pump was causing the lean mixture because it wasn't able to put the fuel out the engine was asking for. The pressure was reading fine on the scan tool. They started physically checking pressures starting at the engine and working back, they were able to track the problem back to the pump. I think that's how I understood the tracking.

That is what I would suggest looking at It should have some trouble codes associated with the ping. If you have a P0191 it's most likely the fuel pump driver module. It's located on the crossmember ahead of the spare tire. A fuel pump would most likely throw a P0231 or P0232 code.

I didn't have any trouble codes with mine. It was just driving terrible. Like it was a 2 cylinder and not a solid 2 cylinder. The cylinders that were firing were struggling at best.

I'm glad u got it fixed. A ping on these trucks is usually cause by lean A/F ratio, overheating, or too much timing. It has to be extreme, because the knock sensor will pull timing out if a knock or ping is detected. That being said, a ping is detonation and detonation is murder on the electrodes of the platinum plugs our trucks have. My brother-in-law just recently found that out on his 02 4.6L. He pulled the plug on the cylinder that was not firing and the electrode was gone. Ran a bore scope down there to have looksee and lo and behold there was a hole in the piston. He had a reman engine installed.
