I have almost 800 miles on my 2012 RegCabXLT MaxTow EB and it seems to be pinging under light throttle, moderate load conditions....it states in the owners manual on page 397, "do not be concerned if your engine knocks lightly." It does not seem to knock under full throttle, moderate load, or at least I can't hear it and I have tried all 3 available fuel grades with similar results.......although I'm not supposed to be concerned, I find it slightly unsettling to listen to my brand new high tech engine pinging away as the truck is moderately accelerated down the road from a stop!
Any one else have a not to be concerned pinging ecoboost?
I think this is a first. Have you contacted your dealer?
No I haven't......although I would like to verify that the sound I'm hearing inside the cab is actually pinging and not something else.....sure sounds like it!
Has it happened with more than one tank of fuel? Do you get your fuel at the same station?
Maybe it's an isolated case of a low octane mix where you get your gas. Perhaps filling up at another station and see if it goes away. Maybe try 89 and if it dissappears then I would take it to the dealer.

This is the start of the 3rd tank...don't know what the dealer put in, but the 2nd tank was 89 Shell and this tank is 91 Safeway brand.....no difference in the perceived knock amplitude between the three.
hummmm ...... the HP fuel pump is probably the loudes thing on the entire engine ....
i wonder if a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil through the fuel tank would help break in the HP fuel system.
works absolute wonders on fuel pumps. Ive done installs with and without the MMO, and the difference is night and day. Some additional lubricity in the fuel system really keeps new fuel pumps from howling during the first few hours, wonder if it would do anything to quite up the fuel injectors?
sure can't hurt anything..... if i had one, i'd try it. (FWIW, i always use it in my small engines and anything that sits to keep a little oil film inside the fuel system)
Are you sure you are not hearing the high pres. fuel pump? It ticks fairly loud especially once broken in.
Well thats interesting........I don't know if that is what I'm hearing, is it constant or does it vary with throttle position and load.......I can only hear it at light throttle and load.

I would try it if I was sure that the HP fuel pump was the culprit.....I like the concept of fuel pump noise as oppose to engine knock.
Ping is very rare with newer engines as they have knock sensors which will take off timing once a ping is detected. If it is happening with all 3 fuel grades I would say you are just hearing the fuel pump.
Direct Injection motors need about 2,000 psi at the fuel injectors, so the fuel pumps on the ecoboost motors are usually cam driven to supply the mechanical "Boost" in fuel pressure. I've heard ticking noises in Audi's and I also owned a Sky Redline which had a DI turbo-4. I believe most of the car manufacturers use units made by Bosch. With my Sky, at idle you'd hear 1 loud tick and a series of lighter ticks and then another loud tick. Then under light to moderate load, you'll hear a consistent taka-taka-taka. Then the higher in RPM you go, the smoother the HP fuel pump sounded and soon the engine would overtake the noise of the fuel pump.
Ok, then I'll vote for the fuel pump for now as the knock sensors should detect and pull timing......although I wonder why light pinging is noted in the manual and states not to be concerned if?
Also, if the knock sensors are dysfunctional that would throw a code, correct?
BTW, can anyone point me to a technical paper or whatever that describes the various components and the operation of the engine managment system in detail?
