I just installed a Summit Racing cam in my 460the cam has a 204/214 duration @ .05 479/504 lift and 112 deg lobe separation the timing set is a new OE replacement. Is it normal to have to run timing at 25 deg BTDC, that is wear it seems to run the best.
It your running 25 BTDC at idle...that would not be normal. If that is the case you probably have the dissy in one tooth off. At idle you should have the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged to check initial timing. Deen
I did disconnect the VA but I didn't plug it. I will tri that as soon as I get home. I was very careful to have the timing marks on the new gears aligned just right.
Since this isn't normal how can this be corrected and could it be doing any damage, it has very good throttle response and a little more power and it's not overheating at all.
is it possible your balancer is "spun"? did it time differently before the work you did on it? you may want to verify TDC on your balancer using a piston stop tool. call back if not familiar with this.
The balancer does look a little ragged some of the rubber is coming out from between it but it was running a perfect 8-10 BTDC before the cam installation.
I don’t have a piston stop tool and I've never used one.
If the balancer is spun wouldn't the timing mark on the balancer change a little every time I revved the engine hard, I've only cheeked it twice and never got on it between checks this could be happening if so would a balancer from a 460 in a 70's Thunder Bird work I have one that looks to be in good shape. I don’t know the real difference between internally and externally balanced other than exactly how it sounds but my truck motor I think is external and the car motor is internal I say this because the truck motor has that spacer with the balancing lobe on the side of it behind the balancer and the car motor doesn’t.
