Total advance on a modified FE

I have a 390 with flat tops, 272 crane cam,Edelbrock Streetmaster intake, 750 Edelbrock carb.,Accell super coil, headers, Etc..My question is: I adjusted my timing by ear @ 3000 rpms. and later I checked it with a timing light and it read 42 deg. advanced @ 3000 rpms..It runs strong @ 42 deg. no knocking or pinging.Do you know if it is ok to run it @ 42 deg. advanced?Any thought out there?

Your engine will tell you what it likes. If you are not experiencing detonation (pre-ignition)(knocking) then you are fine. There are many factors that determine where your engine wants it's timing to be, but where it runs strongest is the best indicator that you have it right. My 511 ran just fine at my altitude with 92 octane, 12:1 compression, and 264@.050 cam with 18 initial, and 44 total degrees. I ran it as high as 48, but didn't see any gains, so I set it back to 44. I ran 32 on the bottle with 112 octane.

If it knocks under hard acceleration then move it back. If not, enjoy it.

If you are running the engine in a light setup with a steep rear gear then you can get away with the total advance past 38° total. I ran 44° in my stock and modded 428CJ in a 3200 pound race car with 4.30 gears and a 4 speed. Well actually I ran 44° in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear but in 4th I dropped total timing back to 38° to prevent holes in pistons. You can't always hear pinging in a high preformance engine. The pistons will tell you when they have a hole in them, which is way to expensive for my tastes.

Re: total advance

Thanks Scouder and Bear 45\70 for responding back to my question. I feel better now that you guys have giving me your experiences. I will leave the timing were it is.

what kind of et's were you getting with the 428cj 4.30 gears setup? What hp was the 428cj?

While I ran the engine stock (factory rated at 335 hp @ 5200, however the stocker with C-6 shifted all by itself in Drive at 6000 rpm. Chassis dyno runs with the car showed 420+ flywheel horsepower and 335 rear wheel horsepower.) in a stock 1969 Ford Cobra (Fairlane/Torino body) fast back with Ram Air, weighing 3600 pounds, including factory air conditioning. With street tires the car ran 14.02 ET quickest ever and less than 14.10 always. With slicks it ran low 13.80's. FYI this is the car pictured in my signature.

I found another engineless 1969 Ford Cobra Notchback that I turned into a race only car. The car had a toploader 4 speed and weighed in at 3200 pounds. The engine now had a true 10.7 to 1 compression, headers, a cleanup port job to smooth out the corners and a single 780 holley on top ran 13.20s consistantly and with a little bleach would run in the 13.10s with a best of 13.04. With a Ford stock 406 3X2 set up the car ran in the low12.90 with a best of 12.79. Oh and the damn thing would carry the front tires a car length.

I am running this motor in a 1976 F-100 swb truck with 3.50 gears and 18'' rims.I read the plugs and they look like I took them out of the box. They have been in for about 4 months.I don't know how much the truck weighs or what kind of time it will run?I will have to build the transmission before I take it to the track.Talk to you later.
