I just got done replacing the cab floor in my '79 F-350 and put a new battery in it..... it has not been driven regularly since Nov. Now my headlights and turnsignals aren't working.... I figure it's a fuse... but which one? Can't find my chilons.... Can anyone help? Thanks!
Everything works well..... other than the headlights and turn signals..... It doesn't matter whether then engine is on or off. Interior lights work... I'm not sure if the hazards work... I should check that.... I haven't found anythign else that doesn't work... which means the ground should be ok.... and the positive connection to the starter solinoid and harness should be ok
Right?
If am I not mistaken...the headlights get power from a current limiter on the starter solenoid....however this same limiter feeds the accessories thru the igntion switch....so if your heater works it most likely isnt the limiter unless there has been some wire modifications
The turn signal fuse is F9, second from bottom right corner in fuse box, again if I am not mistaken.
There is a circuit breaker in the headlight switch, but I would tend to believe since you did floor work your problem may be in the dimmer switch mounted on the floor. Check for power there with the lights on.
Yellow is power into the switch, green is hi beam and red is lo beam. The colors may be off a little but one will have 12 volts on it if the power from the headlight switch is good, just make sure you have the lights turned on before you check.
Thanks Sparky!!! I'm almost imbarassed to say it, but I forgot to reconnect the dimmer switch on the floor.... ...... Lit's work like a champ now. And now I know that the headlight problem has nothing to do with the turn signal problem. Guess if it'll ever stop raining I'll try to get out and start tracing those wires. Also, when I turn my headlighs on the right turn signal indicator becomes illuminated. It flashed normally when my turn signal was working and it's not illumated at all when my headlights are off and my turn signal is not being used. Try that problem on for size.... Thanks again for all your help!
Bad ground. Could be the socket or the bulb but is probably the connection on the core support. When the lights are on the turn signal filiment is seeing power and feeds back thru' the indicator bulb. As far as not working, if all the bulbs light after you fix the grounds, it's got to be the flasher.
Just my $.02
Greg
[ I dont think you meant it wasnt connected
I think you meant to say it was loose....right
The headlights turning on the turn signal indicator is definitely a ground problem. It will be on the side that the turn signal is illuminated on, and probably the front socket
Most times I find that replacing the socket fixes these problems, they are corrosion prone. But It could just be a bad ground wire.
Yes Sparky, I did mean that the ground connection, while it looks tight and IS hooked up, could have corrosion under the connection and not allow current to pass through it. And yes, it could be the socket but it is definitely a ground problem. Better?
Or were you replying to wrangler76 about the "loose" connection on the dimmer switch? Been there, done that too.
Greg, with my dunce cap on.
The turn signals are on there own fuse they should say t/s next to them if you cant read the letters anymore i THINK its the one in the upper right hand corner.

Yes I was was kind of using a statement we use at work when someone forgets to hook something up. It is never not hooked up just real loose
Also if someone happens to pickup something that is really hot, like a piece of metal just ground down on the wheel, then they drop it real quick...you almost instantly hear "Some heavy eh"
