Question f-150 m/t gears are really hard to find esp. 3rd whats wrong

I just bought a 95 f-150 with a 300 straight six and amanual tranny first and third are really hard to wiggle into most of the time. Is this a linkage problem / inner tranny problem / operator problem lol. Anyhow I already love the truck just wish the tranny wasn't so tempermental. Any suggestions welcome

When I bought my 92 f150 with a 302 manual it took some getting used to. I have to shift into 2nd then to 1st that seems to work better. Have to be going slow for that. Also when I shift, you can't do it fast, have to shift like an old guy and take your time. Then it works ok. I plan on doning some trans work this summer but has been working ok if I take it slow.

Question the shifter has tons of play

Even in gear the shifter floats around quite a bit and the position of the gears seem to change like if I normallly go straight up into first all of the sudden I have to go straight up and to the right to wiggle it. Third has been like that consistently since I bought the truck. The previous owner said he had it looked at and was told it was some sort of linkage problem but didn't have any info on where or how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Check the shift pins, that is a very common failure point on the M5R2 trans.

I vote for the shift pins also. There is a kit available on Ebay for this. I ended up taking a round head bolt and minority constructed a pin. Has work fine ever since. You have to pull the shifter out and you will find it. Common problem, easy inexpensive fix.

Hurst Hifter FTMFW!

Best money I EVER spent on the truck. And while you are there, do the shift plug mod as well....
