I have a Viper (DEI) alarm with remote start. Haven't had any problems with it. It waits for the wait to start light (PSD) to go out and then it cranks over. Has pretty good range too.
I have an AstroStart 3006A and it works on Diesel, propane, or gas. It has settings to automatically start if the temp gets below a certain temp. Also you can adjust how long you want it to run. Distance I was told is about 2500 feet. Don't know how true that is but it will start from a long way. I opted for this cause it has an alarm with it as well.
I installed a Bulldog RS102 a couple weeks ago. $70 at walmart, made in USA. Anyway, 400' range and the door locks and starter are on the same remote. Would have been easier to install if the wire color codes would have been updated for my '02. Overall, not bad to install. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it so far.
I installed (actually had installed) the Ford Gold remote start. My 03' 250 did not have the "advanced securit group", so it gives me the doors, alarm, and auo start.
The part was $353 (OUCH!), and I paid another $150 to have it put in.
Did the same with my old 01' 150, and it worked great, so I didn't want to chance anything else.
I'll third the Bulldog, it was simple to put in (01) and seems to do the job.
The first one I had only lasted a year, so I installed the same thing because it was easy, and this one seems to be a lot better than the original. The only bad thing is , for my 01 it has "C" type locks, which means you need another 20 buck relay, of course on the package they don't tell you that.
i had a viper on my 00' ford xplorer and it included an alarm. i am likely going to get the same thing on my SD. it was about $400 installed (ouch)...but its cheaper than getting the security group option & then adding an autostart later. (unless you can do the install yourself.
i am pretty good w/ electrical stuff...i have done many a radio, amp & lights....but the octopus of wires in the remote start is very intimidating. hats off to those who have installed.

The lock type had me confused for a while. If you have the factory remote locks, you have Type "B" locks and do not need the extra relay. Otherwise, you have Type "C" locks and need it.
I took some pictures when I installed it with the idea that maybe writing a Tech Article for this site would be helpful.

ill second that!!
thanks fellas. im looking for one for my truck and one for the wifes vw.
how detailed are the bulldogs? both vehicles have the stock alarms and remotes for locks.
Speaking of auto starters, my neighbor has her Xcursion auto start on a PSD, and whenever it starts, the parking lights automatically go on as well. How can this be done ?? (you can tell I'm new at this

The parking lights coming on are a feature, you can also have the horn honk if you wish. It's just a way of telling where your ride is and that it started. I start mine from about 300 feet away from my office, if the lights didn't flash I wouldn't know if it worked. Anyway there are several features that can be done such as sub zero starts, length of run etc.... Matt if you would like help on the paper let me know. Don't know how they work with the diesel, gonna look into that one, I know they do though!

The instructions are very detailed as far as what to do... but not very detailed as far as how to do it on a particular vehicle... if that makes sense. They try and make one starter and instruction book for all vehicles rather than tailor it to the Super Duty. If you go to their website, the have all the color codes and locations for the wires you will need to find. The color codes seem to be accurate. Plus, they have a very good tech department at both email and 1-800 number.
Go for it!
Oh, and I will work on an article that fills in some of the info that the generic instructions leave out.
