im really wanting to get a 70's model 4x4 crew cab and in my mind i plan on fully restoring it and having it just to treasure for myself. and instead of putting a big block in it like most people do to offroad in it, i would prefer put a new ford diesel in it from the dealership. would this be possible without doing a whole lot of work? im new to all this so i hope im not makin myself sound like an idiot. just curious. thanks
It will be a whole lot of work and it won't be cheap. I am not saying it isn't worth doing because I think a dent side with the new 6.7 Scorpion would be really cool but its out of my budget and skill level.

I finally got a crew cab and will be installing an idi diesel, this is not to bad is far as rthe motor and running gear. If you want a newer electronic diesel things will be more complicated. I have seen where a member on here has done it though he used the newer wireing harness and swapped the new dash in too.
search on it, there are a few neat diesel swap threads I found on here. I think your best best would be a 12 valve cummins... easy to swap and easy to make tons of power on. Not a huge advantage to going with a newer motor other than wow factor and the wiring just gets more and more complicated as you go newer than IDI.
I'd skip the 6.6 and do a 12 valve cummins. It was also available in the F600's so if anyone gives you **** about badge mixing you can give them the finger. The swap is so well documented into basically everything that its as close to bolt in as you could find.

cummins in a dodge is badge mixin. ford owns cummins.

Good to see people still believe in the "ford own cummins" myth.
There's nothing wrong with the Cummins 6BT, it's just as common as a 302 in a Mustang.
its all good man. i like to be corrected if i state somethin that isnt fact. as long as im corrected with a fact. ive got nothin against learnin somethin new.
well i really appreciate all the help. like i said i dont even have this truck yet. im 16 and its just a dream of mine to have older vehicles and do the restoring myself and to my liking the way i want. i just admire and appreciate all the work that used to go into all these older vehicles. thanks everyone. i live in Bay City tx about an hour south of houston if any of you hear of a crew cab coming up for sale let me know! thanks!
hey man, any time. im 19 and in the same boat you are. if i could act on all my dreams, id have about 20 trucks by now, all built for a unique purpose. lol.
I used to live in houston- a tip for older trucks is check the san antonio craigslist. I saw more nice older trucks out in san antonio than I ever did in TX. All the ranch trucks and stuff.
And since youre young, let me share with you some wisdom imparted on me from previous projects:
Its fun to dream big, but you gotta plan small. Take things one mod at a time. Taking an old truck and swapping in a new diesel would be a tall order for even the most experienced shop. Get the truck first, find one that runs. Drive it. If you wanna swap it, find the easiest diesel that will swap in. Get that under your belt first, you know?
