So I notice that alot of other diesels seem to be putting out more smoke then I do. I have a 4" exhaust with no cat.
I will see trucks just pulling away from a stop light without getting on it and they will be putting out smoke. I can get on it pretty good about half way down in 80e and not put any smoke out.

Just curious.
i'm with you...my truck doesn't smoke at all, and it makes me wonder if something is wrong with mine...then i remember that i have no tunes, and a stock engine with the exception of the muffler delete...i just figure that if i want mine to smoke more, i need to satisfy the PMS monster and add expensive goodies...
you gotta remember your average joe out there has a plug and play programmer that just throws fuel at the motor just creating smoke and EGT's, dont get jealous smoke is unburned fuel and its just wasting money, my truck smokes average id say but thats after intake exhaust injectors and all the little mods ive done and a plug in towing chip and when i hammer down, dont buy a chip or programmer just so you can smoke

More smoke can also suggest a boost leak somewhere too so its just not the programmers and tuners out there, could be a number of factors but Gagew90 explained it pretty good. I used to think mine didn't blow smoke either but thats a good thing of sorts, its running good. Now when I really mash on the skinny with my tunes I can smoke out with the best of them, no boost leaks here.
A lot of smoke usually means a poorly tuned truck. It's getting too much fuel and not enough air. I would say Jody has your truck tuned well if you can't get smoke in 80e tune.
I used to think I wanted a lot of smoke. But anymore I like it burning clean, but still be able to walk around most other vehicles on the road.
I consider my truck to be in pretty good shape,i'm happy with the way it runs out,but on 80e OR 120 race,i don't get a lot of smoke,i get smoke, but it's not the dark cloud like some. Now that being said,it still(had a thread running on it)has a slight rough idle at times so there could be something wrong with mine too...just throwing my.02 out there
Wow nice Vid. This is all good to hear. This stuff all makes sense I was just not totally sure what was really going on. I just see a lot of diesels throwing smoke for no reason. It is nice to be able to roll the coal, just not when you dont want to.
i have a 90 f250 diesel non turbo and i dont blow smoke at all maybe a little here and there but not much how do i turn it up make blow smoke and i have duel 3" pipes
Keep in mind that this new ULSD really causes more smoke in our trucks than the trucks that are designed for it. I know, I ran some red stuff for a little while and my truck didn't smoke as much, ran quieter, smoother and just seemed more happy. Funny thing is that the government wants better emissions but makes the oil companies produce fuel that causes less efficient engines.
But anyhow, I don't smoke much either. I cause a nice haze of grey/black when I REALLY stomp it but I don't smoke. I prefer less smoke and more burn but without frying my valves or anything else for that matter.
Then again I'm not running a DP ATM, running a SuperChip that came with the truck, can't afford the DP that I want. In coming days I guess I'll get one.

and you're complainin? those guys are prolly dodge boys with an edge box prolly not runnin gauges and those egt's are prolly climbin high. btw hope are those liberal hippies up in wa about smoke. i'm stationed at ft lewis (deployed) and i haven't had my truck up there but it'll be there when we get back and i don't want to get citations for pollution and what not. it aint really bad right now but when i come home for leave i'll probably leave it at beans when i go back and let them play with it before it gets shipped to wa.

You may have more luck in this forum click here, most of us only deal with the Powerstrokes, so we won't have too much to say about the IDI motors. Those guys down there should be able to point you in the right direction a lot better than most of us can.
