IDK if this is for the truck in you sig or not but if it is then I dont know if the SD's are different from the OBS's. I'm not sure about a sensor that causes hard shifts on the motor but you might want to check the TRS on the side of the tranny, again IDK if its the same on a SD.
Its for a 97. a neighbor was telling me that he was having hard brutal shifts. Took it to dealer and they said tranny needed rebuilding for $2490. He said no thanks. Claims he took off a sensor off the top of the engine, cleaned it, and now the tranny shifts fine. Don't know the name of the sensor though.
I suggest asking your neighbor to show you what he did. I'd be interested in knowing what sensor he cleaned. I have the same problem intermittently and have been unable to fix the problem. It's driving me nuts.
I honestly can't think of any engine-mounted sensor that has anything to do with the tranny.
Okay, its a 96 7.3 and the sensor is directly under the "powerstroke" cover. I believe its the EBPV turbo sensor. He said removing it and cleaning the sensor and the tube eliminated his hard shifts.
He put a drill bit by hand up the sensor, and cleaned the tube with wd40.
How or why cleaning that sensor would eliminate a hard tranny shift is beyond me, but he says thats all he did to eliminate the rough shift.
The EPBV sensor activates (closes) the EBPV in the turbo to assist with engine warm-up. I agree that cleaning the tube is needed, but...the EBPV has no direct (AFAIK) impact on tranny shift harshness. The tranny and turbo are not connected in any fashion I'm aware of.
This a SWAG on my part, but MAYBE the PCM/TCM adjusts shifting pressures based on indicated turbo boost levels. If that's the case, then I can see a possibility of the EBPV system affecting shifting harshness, but again, this is a "Silly Wild Azz Guess" on my part.
Gotta get ready for work. Let me know if cleaning this system works for you. I may give it a try just because mine probably needs cleaning anyway.
I guess I'll hafta try cleaning mine when funds become available. With the luck I have, I'll get in there to clean it and find holes in the tube, etc that require replacing. I'll probably break something during disassembly, too.
My '95 was/still is having hard shifts. There is a sensor in the top of the differential that is my problem. This is less than $20.00 at NAPA.
I never saw the OD lite (on the shift lever) blinking till I was driving at nite. That's the clue to look for. Also it was intermittent, when it started to shift hard I'd pull off the road & shut it off & start back up & that would temporarily solve the problem.
I still need to replace it, just being lazy!
If you do a search of the forum you'll find the thread that details this problem.
