This winter I have been having problems with starting my truck during cold weather. I have a 98 F-150 4.2L V6 and now my truck wont start. Its been really cold here in the negatives every day. It turns over but just wont start. Ive had this problem about a month ago and once i pulled the truck into a heated garage it finally started back up. But now I am at college and there is no way to get it somewhere to heat it up. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there maybe a sensor that has gone bad or is malfunctioning? Could i put some dry gas in the tank and might help? Can anyone please help?
I don't have an answer to your question, but I have 97 4.2 bought used at 30 K and I have had cold weather start problems ever since I have had it. I live in Western Canada, so we have lots of cold days. The truck will always start, but runs rough or will stall for the first minute or so. This happens whenever the weather gets down around 0 C.
I have never had any other mechanical trouble, and otherwise the engine runs great.
I had the same problem back in November. Ran rough in cold weather and one day would turn over but not start. I took it to Auto Zone (they will do a free a diagnosis) and showed it to be a fuel pressure problem.
I took it to a mechanic and $1400 later i got it back. It started much better and seemed to run better except in over-drive. So i took it back to Auto Zone and hooked up the diagnosis tool. This time it showed a problem with the Camshaft Position Sensor.
Good Luck.
