Shift Lever indicator not working

1998 F-150. Going down the highway this afternoon and noticed that the orange indicator on the dash said I had the truck in "2". Took my foot off the gas and moved the sifter up one to "D". To my suprise when I put my foot back on the gas I got nothing. On the dash it was in "D" but really it felt like it was in netural. I move it back to "2" and got to my destation. Went to put in "P" but the indicator was no going no futher than "R" and the truck was in park.

It appears that something is broke that moves that indicator. Any ideas?

It sounds like your gearshift indicator is out of alignment. The indicator is linked to the shifter by a little cable, similar to a bicycle brake cable.
The alignment of the indicator can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the mounting nut on the cable.
Here's a link with more information:

Hope it helps!

Smile Right on

Thanks- the white plastic bracket was broke. It holds the adjustment wheel in place. I zipped tied it back together and seems to be working. Called a dealership and they want $45 for the part. Going to shop around and see if I can find it cheeper.

this is where junkyrads come in handy, 99.99% of the time small parts like this are still in the vehicles when you go to look for them, and removing them may be a pain, but it will cost you about a buck, compared to $45, thats a damn good deal

Just what I've been needing, too. . .

I have an 02 Super Crew with the same gear shift indicator problem. Thanks for the info, and I'll be checking on mine this evening and weekend to see if I can repair it.
