High Oil Consumption

I'm a diesel mechanic, and have worked on a variety of diesel engines over the last 15 years.
Yesterday I get a 2002 F-350 with a 7.3L that was towed in due to a no start condition. The first thing I did was checked the oil. There was no oil on the dipstick, and no oil in the HPOP reservoir. I added 9 Qts. of oil to bring everything up to proper levels, cranked for about 15 seconds and it fired, ran a little rough until it purged itself, then ran fine.
I connected the scanner, cleared the code that told me there was no injector oil pressure, ran all the KOEO and KOER tests, everything checked out fin, no codes.
The customer takes the truck, and it dies after 30 miles, I talk to him on the phone and he gets it back here after adding oil again.
There are no huge oil leaks, coolant looks fine, exhaust is barely visible, but looks normal.
Where could 9 Qts. of oil go in 30 miles??? Any ideas out there?

With that much oil loss, you should see where the oil is coming from. It is either coming from the HPOP lines, pedestal, EBPV rod, oil cooler. Need to fill it up, start it and watch for the gusher. lol The truck will not run if the injectors didn't have oil pressure, reason it is dieing.

I just went outside where the truck is parked, put another 9 qts. of oil in it and it fired, ran rough for about a minute, smoked for about 2 minutes - a little blueish, then ran fine. There is a little oil in the valley, didn't find a puddle underneath. Gotta get it into the shop because it's storming out there and I don't get paid enough to work outside in wind and rain! Will check back in awhile.

Is there any oil dripping out of the tailpipe? Let the truck run for a while, that much of an oil loss, you should see a hell of a leak.

Could be a high pressure leak that isn't that visible at idle.I fixed one that would drop a quart every few minutes driving down the road and just have a small drip at idle
That one was one of the plug o-rings on the head

could all internals of injectors be bad and pumping it into the return fuel? Had a cat do that, but only 2 gallons a day.

Thanks for all the replies! After some discussions it looks like I'll be pulling injectors and re-ringing them, and while I'm in there I'll be replacing glow plugs.
As far as exhaust, it looks normal, not to sooty, and dry, no drips.
Right now it is FRIDAY, and I'm 25 minutes late getting the hell out of here! I have something to look foreward to on Monday anyway - get to play with my tools!

Welcome to FTE. Don't forget to inspect the fuel filter. If you've got bad injector o-rings, there's a chance the oil has been going back through the fuel system.

And as mentioned, don't forget to check it under load. See if the signs of leaks or smoke changes.

18 quarts of oil loss externally would make one heck of a mess. Shoot, one quart splatters all over and looks like 18. It's loosing it internally somewhere.

To paddlesplash, what ended up being the 9qt. oil consumption problem? I have the same problem but 2qts in 120 miles. No idea where it's gone. Injector o-rings are less than 2 months, turbo rebuild 2 weeks. Thanks for any assistance.

Check your fuel bowl! If it's black drain the bowl, pull the filter, and turn the key on for about 15 seconds and turn the key off and check the fuel
In the bowl! If it's black you may be on to something!!

bulla, thanks for the place to check. I did look in the fuel before the injector o-rings, a few days after the Allied o-ring install, and 2 days ago. I've not seen anything but clean fuel. I did the ccv bypass, and shot 125 psi air down the line but it was clear to the end.
