Been having a problem with my brakes.. this has happened 4 times now. I dont know where to start for a fix. Basicly ive found it only happens after ive been driving for an hour or more. The problem is the brakes start to drag. the first time it was the front passenger side, second time it was the drivers side, third time it was both fronts and today it was the rear passenger side. everytime the truck started to shake when stopping then shook all all the time. then you start to feel the drag. brakes smoke when stopped. today i felt all the wheels and none were hot besides the right rear and like i said was so hot it was smoking. any ideas?
Looks like its time to do your brakes . It could be a couple of things calipers sticking brake line collapsing etc. I would just up grade to better brakes or just repalce with stock suff. If you do go with fully loaded calipers. Good luck.
Interesting. My son's E99 is doing the same thing. He's on the road so I will chime in for him for now. His also started with one front then the other. Both front calipers have been replaced and now all 4 are dragging. He hasn't had time to do anything to it yet but we hope to flush the brake fluid this weekend. I'm trying to call a good brake shop for advice about possible abs issues but haven't been able to get them yet. Might also be time to replace all the rubber hoses to eliminate that possibility. If they are defective and are preventing the brakes from coming off, as you use the brakes the fluid would warm up and expand causing the brakes to be applied gradually harder.
The first thing I would do is flush the brake fluid. May as well flush the power steering fluid while you are at it. Remember ATF in the power steering pump.
Could a bad porportioning (spelling) valve cause this too? If the fluid is brown its time to change it. Brake fluid is made to absorbe moisture. Get Dot3-Dot4 fluid it has a higher boiling rate and stay away from the silicone stuff(Dot5). It will cause you MAJOR issues.
Talked to a local shop about possible causes of brakes dragging. Here are some tests to determine the source of the cause. With truck jacked up so you can turn some of the wheels pump the brakes to cause the drag.
1. Loosen the bolts holding the master cylinder and pull out a little. If brakes release the push rod from the booster needs to be adjusted.
2. If not, reinstall master cylinder and loosen one or both brake lines. If the brakes release, replace the master cylinder. If not reinstall lines.
3. Loosen a line or lines from the ABS control. If the brakes release, replace the ABS unit.
4. If not, loosen rubber brake line at the caliper end at the wheel. If brakes release, replace rubber hose.
This is a rough outline of the steps to test. There was no test for the booster. Always start each step with all bolts and lines tight and fluid topped off. Hope this helps a little.
not parking brake
not pedal spring
fluid is good (not brown)
bleed the system today
and like i said if u let the truck sit for a few hours the brakes loosen up and are fine again. also i knoticed the harder i am on the brakes (was rushing around today) the faster it happens. im thinking brake lines.. but all of them???
Greased both front caliper slide pins yesterday (both sides moved freely before greasing) but had it apart so said what the hell.. then went for a 30-40min drive hard braking and got the drivers side front to clamp up.. guess im ordering SS brake lines next
Where did you get your SS brake hose @ I'M tracing down a pull on my brakes & going to start with the brake hose, but would like to replace with SS vs the stock rubber from NAPA
ya mine didnt stick at all on the drive later today, im gonna have to pull them off and lube the slides and change the fluid and bleed them, the fluid was pretty ugly brown..
