Did FMC improve the EGR valve we all love so dearly?
I thought I read somewhere here that they did, but cannot find it.
If they did is there anyway to tell if you have the "new and improved" version?
Thank you for the help.
As far as I know they didn't change the EGR Valve. I believe they changed the EGR Cooler to a round tube instead of a square tube in 05 and this was proved to be inferior. Not positive on this though. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes Ford did change the valve and it was well over a year ago if not longer, the valve is a different color but I couldnt tel you the difference but they are visually distiguishable while new.
The F-550 and up now use an iron valve, and lower engines use an aluminum one. They both are water cooled. Keeping the "hot side valve" cooled has been a challenge, but Ford thinks they will now last 250,000 miles.

...and the "round tube" cooler design is the older version. It's supposed to be a bit sturdier than the newer, "square" tubes. They both fail. If keeping the system, and these concern you, look into the Bullet Proof Diesel upgraded coolers.

When I had mine replaced under warranty this is the part number they show.
I think after 50K it needs to be taken out and cleaned.
Shame, shame, shame on me.
Is there anyway to tell if they are still good or shot?
bismic, thank you again for having this information readily available. You must have a really big hard drive.
Hope you back is better.
Ford found out their cold side EGR valve covered in this 6.0L forum, is very subject to failure due to particle buildup. This placement error cost Ford a lot of money with vehicles under warranty. That is why they stopped replacing them when they are not operating correctly, and went to cleaning them and retesting.
The good news is they now recommend routine cleaning. Routine cleaning will extend the valves life, and can be used as a good indicator of motor performance.
You may want to have a spare set of orings and a gasket before pulling the EGR valve, in the event they are damaged or show signs of wear. Clean and lubricate orings thoroughly, and closely inspect gasket each time.
Pulling the valve is modestly easy and quick. A good rule of thumb is to inspect the valve each time you replace your fuel filters.
Because of the cost and problems with the cold side valve, Ford now has a hot side valve which they learned about in Europe. They also have fuel being delivered to injectors at up to 30,000 psi.
