Do you have to jack up the engine on a 97 f-250 4x4 to get the cooler out? I can't get mine in the shop right now and its puking coolant so I have to fix it outside. No good way to jack the motor up in the mud.

I didn't . Just took out the bolts . Hanging the front gasket was the hardest part...
BTW. the front bolts come out easy from in front of the tire with a long extension
Cool. I got all the bolts out but one. I had to come in and warm up. I'm soaked from laying in the mud and it just started raining and snowing again! I'm so glad I am not doing this stuff for a living in the Army anymore!
When you re-assemble and are putting on the end caps you might want to try pulling the caps together with a looped ratchet strap, least that is what I did and it worked great. Then once caps are on you can use a light nylon strap/webbing to the whole assembly together to fit it back in there. Think if you do the front up lightly first then the rear....DO NOT over torque bolts especially the fronts...you run the risk of cracking the flanges on the front cover......get the FORD cooler to block gaskets not IH ones....don't ask...
You can push the front gasket in from the underside once you get the cooler against the block.
You know if you where being paid to work in those conditions it would be Waaay worse.....hahahaa.....I LOVE antifreeze and oil drippin in my ears and on my glasses....hahahaaa
I got it out. That wasn't too bad, other than my legs getting soaked from the rain. I got smart when I went back out and put down a piece of cardboard to lay on so I was out of the mud.
I got it all apart and cleaned. The inside of the cooler was just nasty. 280,000 miles on that truck. I have a hot tank in the shop for cleaning guns that made quick work of that.
I had to get this one to put on my 94 that is really puking. It's got the snap ring on the bypass valve too.
I ordered the alliant gasket set for it. It's got the o rings and gaskets. I think they are the same ones supplying Ford now. And international. I've got a press to get it together so hopefully it won't be a problem. Just grease it up good where the o rings go right?
I can't believe this is the first one of these I've ever had to do. I worked at Ford for quite a while on these trucks. You guys are a big help.
Yep, you'll want to lube those O-rings. White lithium grease is good for that, but good old Vaseline works too. Also, I sometimes use small dabs of contact cement to hold a gasket that's in a tight spot.
