Cruise Control Not Working

Are you having ANY speedometer, shifting, or 4WABS problems? The cruise shares the vehicle speed signal with the EEC, E4OD, ABS, and even with the compass on vehicles with that option. Sometimes, metal shavings from the diff build up on the sensor. They're easy to clean off, but they're signals of big problems in the axle.

The cruise is also dependent on the clock spring in the steering column - do you have an airbag light or an intermittent beep emanating from the passenger footwell area?

The brake light switch & the pressure switch on the front of the master cylinder kill the cruise, so check them, and both get power from fuse 13 under the dash.

One other thing that I have noticed kills the cruise control is if some of your vacuum lines are disconnected or have holes.

On my 94 F250 460, almost everytime I work on the passenger side of the engine, I knock the cauum plug off of the Air conditioner housing and stuff against the firewall. Usually my elbow knocks the little plug with 2 or 3 hoses off just enough to break the vacuum but not enough to be visually obvious. So I always check these lines if I have a problem with cruise or sometimes the check engine light coming on after a short trip just after some engine work.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Interesting, a 93 150 all electronic cruise and a 94 250 with vacuum, could be engine dirrerences. I don't know, since I am by far no expert. I just know my truck, it has electronic cruise but for some reason it also is affected by the vacuum. Could be some engine sensor that is set off by the vacuum signal that kills the cruise.

Don't know. In either case it takes maybe 1/2 minute to check and fix, and the cost is free. Whether this affects the cruise or not it is worth checking connections periodically anyway mine are deceiving, tehy look plugged in when they are not.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I know the cruise on a '95 PSTD is integrated into the EEC, but I don't know why yours is affected by vaccum. Do you have a big round servo with a cable coming out of the center bolted near your L hood hinge? His has a little square box with a long connector across the top & the cable coming off the side. It has no inputs that would be affected by a vacuum leak, except that it's programmed to shut down if vehicle speed falls 30mph below set speed or below 30mph.

a 16 sequence code...if the ABS has a problem, will this shut down the cruise, and also does anyone have a decode for the ABS lamp flashing 16 times, pause then repeats? I have troubleshot problems using the "Check Engine" lamp flashingcodes. Is this similiar? I also have a diagnostic analyzer (not just the flasher type,a true readout analyzer) for the ECC, will it clue me in on the ABS?

The Haynes manual tells how to trigger ABS codes, and lists many of them. You can probably find that info here also.

I do know that explorer, ranger and the cruise module for my 97 f250 460 are all interchangeable. That may help you out at the junkyard. I don't know what years it all extends to but a 94 explorer cruise module is identical to mine and it was also $30 cheaper, go figure!

I would need to go take a look at the cruise control of my truck to be sure what type of mechanism is there. All I know if that there is one set of vacuum plugs that if they get disconnected, will cause the CEL to turn on after about 5 miles and the cruise won't work after that. I think the computer may monitor vacuum and use it for several functions.

Unless someone really has to know, I probably won't check it this weekend, since everything works fine, so long as I keep my fumble fingers out of there.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
