Is this normal?

So I just got the truck and I dont know if this is normal or something wrong? When I start it in the morning I turn the key and wait for the light to go off it takes about 5 to 6 cranks and a large cloud of smoke shoots out and it runs like crape for about 25 sec a lot of movement under the hood! After the 25 sec of running rough it smooths out and is real smooth running. FYI its about 30-40 deg out!

You may have a leaky injector. Is your cold start advance working.

Is this how you test Glow Plugs? Pull the cap off the glow plug and stick one lead from the tester in it and the other lead goes on the top of the glow plug? If its in the .5 to 2.0 range than its good?
Is that right

If the timing is right it will rattle for awhile when you first crank it and quieten down when the motor reaches 112 degrees, you can crank it cold and pull the wire off the ip and hear an audible change.
Another thing to check is when you first crank it and get that cloud of smoke is to smell it and see if it has a fuel smell or a sweet smell.

Yea it should rattle but it almost sounds like your describing all the cylinders not firing up together. For sure check the gp's and cold start advance. When you turn on the key and hit the peddle to the floor you should hear that advance click. Quick check on gp's is hook a test light to positive cable, pull connector off gp and touch probe to end of gp. If light lights up bright the gp is good.

So turn key to the # two position but not start and then push peddle to the floor then I will hear the advance click? If no click then bad cold start advance.
Thanks Warozz

NO that is the fast idle solonoid that comes on when you mash the pedal, and when you turn the key on you will be hearing the fuel solonoid click. You need to unplug your cold start advance and you will hear the sound of the motor change. I highly doubt the cold start advance is your problem as they will usually start abd run just as good with out it as with it, but it wouldn't hurt to check it.

I think I get it so this is like a Choke on a carb if I unplug the cold start advance it will idle a little slower! RIGHT also is that the thing that sits on the IP has a pin that almost touches the thottle arm?
Ya I do hear the clicking after my WTS light goes off!
Are we on the same page starmilt?

FYI First thing tomorrow GP test I actualy picked one up today for the glove box its a mastercraft!

If the WTS light stays on for the 10 to 15 seconds, it sounds like your glow plugs and controler are working ok. If you have a dead plug the time will drop to 2 or 3 seconds. If you smell something sweet in your exhaust that sounds like coolant in the cylinders being burned. Not good!
