2005 Excursion PSD

Good day all

Looking at a used 2005 PSD Excursion that just came in on trade at my local Ford store. It's a Limited Edition with approx. 86K kms. on it purchased from and returned to the same dealership, so I might assume serviced there as well.

I know how hard these things are to find so I've been watching for the right deal to come along and perhaps trade up my Expedition. For the record we are avid campers and spend much of the year towing around a 33' 6600 lb. travel trailer with 2 kids, a mutt and all our gear. The Expy does well, but I'm sure a 3/4 ton PSD would do great.

I've never owned a diesel and have a few questions.

$30000.00 CAD seem about right pricing wise given the year, milage and fact it's a PSD?

Although the tow rating is very good, does the Excursion suffer from a fairly dismal tongue weight limitation as did the Expy of about 900 lbs?

I've heard mixed reviews of the reliability of the 6.0 L PSD, especially in the 2003 - 2005 range. Is there truth to it? should there be something in the service history I should look to see was done or NOT done?

Thanks

I tow a 4 horse trailer with an eq hitch and have airbags. Works well and do not slow down making grade.
PM fluid changes are going to be the most important thing to do.
Do not use anything but OEM Ford or Racor Fuel and oil filters on it. Anything else will cost you money.
Keep the original air intake the Donaldson filter works better than aftermarket.
To learn more about the 6.0L go to that section.
Need anymore help just ask no one here is shy.

Most of the problems with the 6.0 were from the older dirty diesel fuel. Now with the cleaner stuff most of the issues are gone.

I say go for it.

At today's exchange rate it is exactly $29231.22 USD. That is of course "sticker" price at the dealership with no negotiations yet.

I'm really itching to go look at this thing. To find one local to me, on a Ford lot, with such low kms, PSD, Limited Edition here in the great white north is rare. I feel like if I pass on it, I may never see such a deal again. DW however won't share my enthusiasm .

Geesh, I bought my 05 for 16g's with 50K miles. It seems like the better ford does during this time in the economy the resale value goes up tremendously on our trucks. Loving it, not that it matters casue I dont plan on selling it anytime.... at all.

And also a general rule of looking and doing research on these trucks, dont neccesarily go by what you read on the forums, these are mostly problems with our trucks. With hundreds of thousands of these 6.0 on the road there are probably double that amount that are happy with our trucks. And in 05 late model 04 Internation motors, Ford had already addressed some of the issues with the problematic motor problems. But, as stated just taqke care of it, use only Racor, Ford Motorcraft or IH filters and it will do you good, a good peice of advice also, is to not put a tuner on it and run a hot tune. It owuld save you heartache to dish out a lot of money on the repairs. Even though, an ESP from Ford wouldnt be a bad idea at the time of purchase.

If you like the truck and it seems clean with a clean report i would say go for it as you will be dishearted if the opportunity never comes around again. As for the vehicle it is a great truck. My friend has the same exact one and no major issues other then ball joints ( common on all x, fuel pump and gpm). otherwise great truck just check it over. Good luck and post pics if you get it.

It's definitely a sign....

Go look at it and if it "tickles your fancy" as my dad says, start the negotiations and go home happy...

If they offer you a reasonably long, but comprehensive extended warranty, take it.

Since you are looking at it from a dealer - request the OASIS report to see what type of repairs have been required so far. I moved from an Expy to the Ex and haven't looked back. Be prepared for a few things to be different depending on what year Expy you currently have. I had a 99, 03 and an 07 - the 03 and 07 road like cars - very smooth and quiet with the independent rear suspension. The 07 got 20 mpg on the hwy and 15 around town so I miss that! The towing experience with the Ex is fantastic - the longer wheelbase, additional power, better brakes all contribute. Hope things work out!

I don't think you can go wrong seeing as it is a nearly extinct vehicle!! Get 'em while you can!
