well i run out on the red line no less than found that out in the parking lot of the gas station bcuz of those ppl who think they own the place and park where ever the hell they want like in front of the diesel pumps with a gas engine. mine runs fine under 1/4 its just getting it started is the problem
NEW INFO, found out at lunch time today has not a whole lot to do with the below1/4 tank it is if it sits for a long time ( i have over 1/2 a tank) like yesterday i got home at 6 and left today at lunch around 12 or 1 it fired rite up then died, and would not start back.(worse than before) had to wait 10 mins for batt to charge so it would crank at least. i have an air intrusion for sure

Reason: forgot part of it
i went to find the fuel return line kit today napa, advance, auto zone, or my local ford dealer could not even get it. i stopped at my local diesel shop and he sold me the kit for 30 bucks, everything but injectors pretty much. replaced it all and the real test is in the mornin!
This is a brainy parts man problem, I know for sure it is in napa's computer but it is called an injector install kit, if you ask for a return line kit some partsmen doesn't know where to look.
that was the problem i assume, the next startup did not go that well on aacount of my idiot freind who doesnt check everything when he gets done, he unplugged on of my glow plugs, had to get it jumped off again, i had a pretty bad fuel leak after i got done dont know why everything was tight but went back through it an tighted everything down tighter and still leaking but not as bad. too cold wet and windy today to mess with it.

it sounds like you nicked the O-rings when installing them.
you can't have any leaks,so your going to need to replace the O-rings.
many of us grab Viton O-rings and ditch the standard Buna O's that come with the kits FYI.
next time when you install them,be sure to lube them up with petroleum jelly or oil first.
were can i get the viton o-rings? what is the easiest way to install it is a little difficult with the injectors still installed but dont want to remove the fuel lines from the ip exspecially the ones on the bottom, cuz im sure i cant bend them out of the way i know better than that i got them up enough to slide the plastic fittings underneath them
reading through this whole thread,i have a couple questions.
1.how long are you cranking before the truck finally fires and runs?
2.when you are cranking, does the engine turn over so fast, that you can't count the revolutions?
3.have you tested the glow plugs,or have you replaced them recently?
if so,with what brand GP's? and how many where replaced?
4.have you inspected the lift pump?
a poor lift pump can cause hard starts as well.although not as common,it happens.
some of us,switch over to electric fuel pumps, and never worry about fuel leaking back again, cus we turn the key,and the e-pump is already priming us before the WTS light goes out.
5.on the first start of the day, whats the average temp outside?
how many seconds does the WTS light come on for?
inspect, your fuel lines from your tank to the engine.paying close attention to the delivery line and where this metal line fastens to the frame.pull the line out of these clips and inspect it for rust.
look closely at the passenger side battery cable where the line to the starter and other battery are connected and it's terminal.
do you see any indication of melting/burnt color or corrosion/swollen cable here?
i give ya what i know off the top,
1. on a good day 15 to 20 secs
2.it turns pretty fast but not too fast to count
3.replaced plugs april last year with autolite, not tested recently, i replaced all 8
4.not inspected lift pump ever i think, im still kind of a newb, but have learned alot, this is located on the side of the block below fuel filter rite?
5.i would say aveage is 45f?...just a guess wait to start lite actually does not work but glow plugs still work i would say 8-10 secs

1.ok,using the info from #5.your counting your "after glow" cycle as well.
2.so when you turn it over, you can or cannot count the revolutions?
3.recommendation: remove these GP's and replace them with motorcraft GP's.
4.yes.in some cases the fuel pump diaphragm can leak.however, this is one of many places that can leak air and cause problems.
even if it does finally start and run.with a pin hole leak,it will just make cold starts hard.
your fuel lines, and filter housing are good places to look first though.just keep this on your mind as a possibility.
5.sounds good.(it's just these plugs are known to swell and get stuck in the head.leading to major repair.)
also, why is your fuel turned up so much?
are you naturally aspirated or turbo?
do you know, without a pyrometer, you could be melting pistons?
if you now have done damage, your compression could be low,and will always have hard starts until you re slug/ring the engine.
how long have you been "rollin' coal"?
i plan on replacing glow plugs next year prolly they still work fine they might swell but the motorcrafts i pulled out were swelled. i do not have alot of money rite now ill do it it comes seein as how im savin for the baby which will be here next month. 3 1/2 flats is a guess maybe 2 or 1 1/2, it just just sounded cooler?.. it smokes a bit but not a whole lot unless i lugg it. i plan on turning it down b4 summer because ill be pullin everyday almost,(its n/a BTW) i just turned it up end of fall so not long. i could count them if i wanted too but it turns pretty fat
ok i dont know about this truck it was nicknamed christine when i first got by one of my friends cuz he shorted out the starter relay an it turned over on him. i just think it knows when i have to be to work and if im running behind it wont start, i worked 12 hours today my truck sit all day in about 40 dgrees f and i was tired and ready to go home, i told my friend to wait incase it didnt start i got in it glow plugs cycled, turned the key cranked for a sec fired up. idk anymore. 250 hd if i did cause damage and loose compression wouldnt i be able to tell by the performance? just curious
