air intrusion?

when i go to start my truck after its sit all night sometimes it happens sometimes it dont but i dont know if this has anything to do with it or not but it seems like it only happens when i have below 1/4 of a tank but she will start then idle high then no matter what i do or how i try to stop it from dieing it does anyway. then i try to start and it dont start then i try to prime it with the air valve on top of fuel filter still doesnt start then i try it so much pausing inbetween start for a min or so cranking from 15-20 secs my batteries get so weak i have to get it jumped off. i planned on find the prob myself but this is getting a little ridiculus and annoying exspecially if it makes me late to work again. anyone any ideas. 1993 f350 7.3 idi 5spd 2wd.
thanks, cole

my guess is the pickup tube in the tank may have broke off.

so it could be the way my truck is sitting when itts parked cuz it never on flat ground would be only sometimes but if it is broke off wouldnt that cause a prob every time i shut the truck off. i have dual tanks but only use my front taank because im too broke to keep fuel in both so i just keep a gallon or two just for back up. i change between the 2 every once in a while should i do it more often?

There has been a lot of threads on this on the 99-03 7.3 section (problems when tank is at 1/4 or less) It is a common issue, do a search on there, they have solutions for it. It might be the same setup in your truck as well.

You have a classic case of air intrusion, most common cause is the return lines on the injectors, can also be the fuel heater fitting in the top of your filter, but this usually has a visable leak. parking with the frontend higher than the rear makes it worse.

This needs to be fixed or your starter will be short lived and return line kits are way cheaper than starters.

I think his is actually the pick up tube problem.

There is a little plastic piece on the bottom of the pick up tube that falls/breaks off.

And then you start sucking air at about 1/4 tank.

Drop the tank, slide a piece of fuel line over the end of the pickup tube long enough to reach the bottom of the tank.
Clamp it in place.
Then cut a V in the end so the tube can not get sucked down on the tank bottom.

Reinstall the tank, and you are good to go.

I hear you, I had one time a pinhole in a line between the tank and the pump that would let air in and fuel bleed back. Usually in this location they will suck air and make them run bad, but didn't this time. It drove me crazy and I couldn't find it until I put some pressure on it. This was on a big truck, but the same principle.

I am experiencing something similar. When on the front tank it starts great until somewhere around 1/4 tank. Then start, stall and trouble. I am only experiencing it on the front tank though. On the rear tank all is well. Once I have started and get running on the good tank I can switch to the front one and finish it up.

As a simple test would try using the other tank for a while. If the issue goes away then your problem is more than likely with the tank as Dave says and not the return lines.

Good luck,
Bob

It is possible I guess that you have a tiny air leak in the pickup tube, probably where the plastic screen attaches to it. This usually makes them run bad from where it starts until you finish off the tank. But like I said I had that one time I guess the leak was small enough that it ran and pulled good, so finding it drove me crazy for about a month.
