I'm getting a clunking sound under the driver side floorboard but only on decceleration never on acceleration or cruising speed. I'm thinking Ball Joints, I've replaced shocks (bilsteins), and swaybar/link bushings. On a side note i'm getting a nasty squeal from same driver side wheel but only when in 4X4. I've also done needle bearing & hub service and all looked good, stub shaft did not show any signs of scarring and U-joints looked good. I'm not sure if the unit bearing is shot or if the ball joints are done. Can the ball joints cause the squealing while in 4WD?
When my ball joints went I had a loud metalic sound coming from the front drivers side wheel, only when I turned the wheels - it was a nasty sound. I would not make the sound with the wheels off the ground, could only test it when the truck was on all fours.
The other sound I had was the oh so common, clunk clunk clunk under the floor boards when my sway bar bushings were shot, again only when turning.
How are you locking hubs? Still have the auto/stock units?
No clue other than what mine sounded like, so hope it helps. I'm sure more experienced users will chime in.
Thanks for the reply, I just replaced the bushings on the swaybar & endlinks and I've checked them for play so no problem there. I have the original ESOF auto hubs and they work well, a little binding when shifting out of 4wd but that's due to excessive grease in the auto hub (used to much when I serviced them). They do disengage eventually after a few miles, the squealing/screaming is loud while in 4X4. I just can't figure out if it's the wheel bearing or not, when I spin the axle stub shaft it somewhat ratchety but barely compared to the passenger side. When I had the bearing off I greased the needle & inside the bearing (through abs hole).
Would a bad wheel bearing be making a clunking sound during decceleration?
The clunk ended up being ball joints, after I replaced them found more clunking from (rear eye) front leaf springs. Both need to be replaced, not sure if I'm going to try to press in new ones or order the whole leaf. Going to need to wait for spring.
As for the screaming I still have it, only when I have the hubs locked in (not engaged). Also the ESOF on the drivers side still not working so I'm guessing bad Wheel Bearing. Under $200 for timkens on amazon.
