My van has just about had it, so I'm going to build a new 300-6 for it. My basic plan is to mod the intake log to fit a 2BBL sideways, EFI exhaust manifolds and Y-pipe with 2.5" exhaust, and bored .050 over with FE pistons. I'm at a pretty decent altitude here and so I can get away with a bit higher of compression than coastal guys. I will also add an EGR.
The van is a 78 E150 with a C6 and 2.75 gears. I'm considering going to an AOD and 3.30 gears, but I don't want to get rid of such a bulletproof drivetrain.
Anything worth changing?
When you say a two barrel sideways do you mean that you would machine a larger plenum into the stock intake running north to south? That sounds kind of like a cool and unique idea but if you already have the 2v carburetor you want you might just consider getting an aluminum intake from ebay with a 2v adapter included. They show up often enough. With 2.75 in the rear you probably get decent highway mileage and you're right that your c6 will probably go 300,000+ miles with 100K ATF and filter changes. I would keep your drivetrain as is until after the rebuild. The extra power may compensate for the 2.75 gears and make lower gears W/ OD not really worth the extra money. I wouldn't bother upgrading any of the duraspark, but I would add low resistance wires. I find Taylor are a good price for the quality.
P.S. I dig the Gary Larson pic you have next to your name
Looks cool!
As long as you get a professional to the Kit & Build an AOD so that All the Design Flaws are taken care of, that AOD will be good to go.
I'd go w/ the Mallory Distrib though it's Better Constructed & Designed.
I've had that avatar since I started here. I only changed it a few times for April 1st, but then all the mods did.
What I'm thinking for the intake is to open up the outside of it from about cyls 2-4, and weld on a plenum to fit the 2BBL with the float bowl facing out, widest in the center and tapering out to the ends. I am set up to properly weld cast iron, so that's not an issue. It won't be as efficient as an aftermarket intake, but it will provide the needed clearance.
I was planning on keeping the Duraspark, I've run it on the 300-6 in the past and only had to upgrade it since I was well past stock with that engine.
I'm thinking of using this cam, it seems to be a good mid-range performance cam and not too radical: Crane Cams 503901 - Crane PowerMax Camshafts - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Has anyone used it?
Some of the EFI owners have used that cam since it was computer friendly...if you can find one. Crane went out of business and was bought by another company and they might not be making that cam. Compare the specs with the Isky 256 Super Cam, Comp 260H, etc which are available.
