I'm sure you are right but I wouldnt even think much of mpg when it comes to this hobby. I do understand though people want to make the most of their gas.
hehehehe. yes i do. 70 to 100 hours a week. (im on my days off right now). id have to say about 9000 of the 13000 came from the months of january to april of 10. bout 2000 before that, and bout another 2000 after that. (i was in college... ) but i still keep my average around 20 posts per day.
WOW. This guy is getting the same heat I got when I swapped my 351W/C4 for a 400/C6 in my 65 F100 2wd. Point of the matter is I wanted torque not for pulling not for hauling, just to burn rubber and cruising . My 351w was getting old and tired and i didnt like having to mash the throttle just to get it to squeal tires, even when it was fresh btw. Now I can smoke tires with ease (1/4 throttle) and can build up to 500hp which is where Im happy. Im looking at making a 13 sec cruiser.
sounds like you have a 400 similar to the two im gonna build. ones swapped into a 72, the other is in my 78.
Yup the 400 is good engine despite what anyone who doesnt own one says. But IMO I dont think the poster will be happy with the results of the 351W. Even mildly built and with its different power band, the 351W is gonna waste just as much fuel as the 460. My stepdad briefly owned a 94 Bronco FS 351W/4x4 man was it a dog, never again. My uncle had a 78 F150 400/C6/4x4 Longbed, that truck was peppy, a lil thirsty about as much the bronco.
I just got done putting a 400hp 351W in my 78, it lacks the bottom and mid range torque of the 460. Once you get the Rs up it screams pretty good though.

Nice engine dude. How much money did you put into that thing to get it up to 400 hp?
I've been wanting to get my 351 built up so that i don't have to pound the pedal to make the tires scream.
He also offers 322 and 395hp versions for considerabley less $$ that you might want to check out as well.
Wow, that's pretty pricey for me.
If I wasn't in school, sure as **** I'd get my hands on one. Seeing how I'm in school right now, that's no where near an option for me. Even doing it myself would cost probably just as much with the tools I'd need.
You guys are confusing me..I bought a 460 to replace the 351 in my 86. Mainly for pulling power. Even with 192,000 miles on the 351 it gets better mileage than my 87 460. Both trucks have 4.10 gears, C-6, SCabs and F250's. The 351 has made many trips from NY-VA and never(lol) overloaded. Leaning towards re-doing the 351 after it hits 200k.
If you are going to tow quite a bit, go with the 460. If it's a daily driver/cruiser, go with the 351. When I built my Son's 86 (5 years ago), I went with a 72 351W (.030), GT40P heads, Comp 270H cam, Mac ceramic headers, Crane roller rockers, Demon carb, built AOD with a 2500 stall converter, and suprisingly it's a torque monster. 5 hard years later, he can still flat out roast his 35" KM 2's from a dead stop, and runs a 14.5 - 14.8 at the track. For those that think that's slow, this is a fully loaded F150 4X4, (working ac), with a 6" lift on 35s. See link for picks
