Not sure bout the early ones, but I have serp in my 82 with a 351. Im sure its possible, even if you have to run an elctric fan as you say. Theres a pic in my garage of my set up, let me know if you want more pics if it will help.
yes it is.... the least costly option will be to use the brackets from a 5.0 Mustang... which can be made to work on a 351W as well. The reason why recommend it is because it is the easiest setup to delet the AC and smoq pump on, which are unessary... You will still be able to keep a crank driven fan.... but you will not have the room to run a clutch unit... you will need the flex fan.....
The only problem with the 5.0 setup from mustangs is that it is getting somewhat rare... and I dont know if anybody is offering the brackets... and the Ford dealership will be pricey....
There are also companies like concept one, march and KRC that make pulley systems that will work.... but they will cost a little less than two grand....
The Explorer serpentine setup is what you want! It's off any 5.0 exploder OR Mercury Mountaineer from '96-'01. They seem to be pretty plentiful in the U-pull-its these days as they were the #1 trade in for cash fer clunkers. Depending on yard and sales, I've gotten them anywhere from $70 to $125 complete.
Good luck and I love the setup I've got on my '69. I run a 2 spd Taurus fan but carry the Explorer clutch fan as a mech backup/ trail spare. Most guys just run the explorer clutch fan.
