Hey all, just wanted to drop a note from the newest member. I have a 94 Aerostar that has recently cost me a big chunk of money, but I love her anyway. It has 229K miles and runs good now. Just had new intake manifold gasket, new thermostat, new MAF, new valve cover gaskets, new plugs and wires, new cap and rotor, and new ignition control module. She is white with grey interior but I am thinking of painting her. Not sure what color(s) yet, but I am looking forward to starting the process.
Welcome to the club. Aerostar can be expensive at times, but the simple fact is that stateside there is nothing else like them. How many vans can you think of that can even make it to 229K. Most start kicking the bucket around 150k, and become increasingly problematic towards 200k, at which point everything starts going downhill. Of course everything depends on how you care for it, but some require a lot more TLC than Aerostars.
We purchase our Aero in 1991 (on used car store in San Fernando) and we used to drive her to 2010. She was used like a bus and like a truck, we hauled some goods from germany (usually 1000-1300 kg). I sold this van with 730K on clock. Well, engine was rebuilt, tranny was swapped with manual 5 st tranny, DS was changed with dual one (with center bearing)... but she runs, still runs....
Well, finally got the word. The distributor is bad and the distributor connector was shorting out and had singed wiring. The connector costs around $200. Not cheap. I will get it back today and I am sure that she will drive like a dream.
Enjoy your "new" ride. When you paint it, have fun with it. I painted my '95 Escort with Ford '09 factory Eddie Bauer colors. To my knowledge it's the only two-tone 'scort in town. I will be "tweaking" the two-tone on my Aero in the near future to update its appearance some.
I thought about working on the paint job of my van too, but need it running first. I need to get a new front bumper. Anybody have a cheap place to get one?
For body parts, I usually go to my local salvage yards. The problem with most of them is that they tend to be in worse shape than mine. But I did get lucky once, and found a van at a place next to my usual U-pull-it place. Since their guys had to pull the parts for me, I ended up paying a little more than I would have at the usual place. But they were in perfect shape; I kind of wondered about the condition of the rest of the van, whether it would been worth resurrecting, had I the time.
What connector was that for $200? I would have tried to get one off a salvage vehicle as well. In the local yards around here, the 3 liter Aerostars are more abundant than the 4 liter.
I agree. About 80% of the Aeros sold came with the 3.0. You should be able to find what you need out there with a little patience. Body parts is another story. I got a rear corner bumper section from someone here on the forum.
