Power steering hose with sensor.

I have to replace what I guess is the pressure hose after changing my steering box (1988 F350 4x4 with 351 5-spd). My hose appears to have an electrical plug on it.
Q: What does the plug in do? What if I replace the hose with a non-plug in hose? Will it set codes?

I checked NAPA but there's doesn't have the plug in ($20). I went to Pull-A-Part and every truck there either had the hose missing already or the hose had no plug in. I found one E-350 that had the plug in, but I thought I'd try here first to see what's the deal on the plug.
thanks.

It is a power steering pressure switch, but it should only be used on 302 (and maybe 300) engines, I think only with manual transmissions. That is probably why the NAPA replacement you found doesn't have provision for the switch - I have a NAPA hose with the port for the switch on my '87. You can unplug the pressure switch before you replace the hose and see if any codes are triggered in the computer.

Thanks. I might have a 302 then. I've never checked it. How do I tell?

I'll try NAPA again. The guy was sick and didn't put much effort into it. I suspected he just looked at one location and went on. I'll try an 87 if we can't find it for an 88 with 302.

Not having the PSPS will cause the computer to throw a code, but it will not turn on the check engine light. I am running without a PSPS and have noticed no difference in driveability.

I found one for the 300 engine in 1988. It has the port. Cost was $28. All is well again, I hope.

Still don't know if it's a 302 or a 351.
