front tank gallons????

i need to know how many gallons the front tank is on a 94 f150 2wd. i want to replace the entire fuel sending unit in the front tank and be done with it. i read on this forum that there are 17 or 19 gallon tanks. i thought i had 16 gallon tank on mines. do i need special tools to tackle this job or will a pliers and screw driver do the job. does anyone have a picture of what this fuel unit looks like so i know what i am looking at before i buy it. my front pump works it just doesn't show how much gas is in it. the needle does move when i make left or right turns. the rear fuel unit works fine. besides lmc, npd, or ebay where can i find a unit at a good price.............thanks...................

according to the owner's manual on my 96 truck, you have 2 options for that truck.
If your truck is a standard cab with a 6ft bed then it holds 16.5 gallons.
If you have anything else, a standard cab with a 8 ft bed, or a ext cab 6 ft bed, or a ext cab 8 ft bed, then You should have 19 gallons.

To pull the tank on that truck you will need to diconnect the filler neck and breather tubes. Disconnect any electrical (you may have to lower the tank to get to them), and disconnect you fuel lines (may need special disconnect tool, but you can get that at any parts store. Then all that holds the tank in place are 2 straps.

What is causing your problem is float on the "fuel sending unit". To remove that (after you remove the tank or the bed of the truck) there is a lock ring, use a hammer and punch to turn the lock ring, then just lift the sending unit out of the tank.

After you remove the sending unit you can do an easy test, clean the contacts at the float arm then just remove your fuel pump relay, then plug the pump electrical back in (pump SHOULD NOT RUN that is why you remove the relay) and with the key on move the float and see if guage moves accordingly if not then replace the "FUEL SENDING UNIT" if you ask for the pump then that is just what you will get the pump only.
Hope this helps

The fuel level sender is just the arm and float that bolts on the outside of the fuel delivery module.. a plastic case that contains the pump and some check valves, and since your FDM works fine there's no point replacing it IMO. I think if you ask for a FDM you will get this piece instead of the fuel level sender but I guess it depends how the parts store identifies it. Here is a pic of a couple fuel delivery modules complete with the level sender and all...

Every sending unit I have replaced has been one piece (Pump, float, and housing).
My service reps have sold "fuel pumps" (to lower the price and secure the sale) and every time they do all you get is the pump with 2 wires, and then I end up having to disassemble the sending unit and wire in the new pump.

You might be able to get the float seperatly for cheaper, but I recomend the sending unit, that way everything inside the tank is new and you don't have to worry about it for a while.

If the sending unit is not working it could be the brass float(right side one in Conaski's photo) filled up with gas. I had many of those fill up and sink to the bottom! If you have the foam float(left one in photo) then the sending unit could be bad. On most my trucks with the brass floats, I haved changed them over to the foam floats and never had one sink again and just bent the sending unit arm for some "reserve" gas when empty.

My extended cab shortbed has a 16 gallon so you'd better double check what you have. I also know that the pump assemblies are not interchangeable. BTDT.

My mistake, I looked it up again and you are right, if you have a 6 ft bed then it is 16.5 gallons, if you have 8 ft bed then it is 19 gallons. Cab size does not really matter.

whats up guys.....thanks for the quick feed back. i do have a standard cab and 6ft. bed. thanks conanski for the photo of the fuel sending unit, it helped a lot. now i know what to look for. mr. finch where is the fuel relay or could i just remove the fuse to stop the pump from running. i want to run the test that was described to see if it just needs a cleaning, but it feels like i might have to buy a complete unit if nobody sells just the float.............thanks again everyone for the feed back.............

the relay should be either inside the engine compartment fuse box, or one of the relays next to the fuse box. Not sure wich one.
