Running those tunes and OEM head bolts........it is just a matter of time.
You can tell if it is head bolts or EGR cooler with a Combustion Leak Tester from UVIEW. Cost about $50 of the net. Best $50 I spent on my 6.0. You sample the air in the coolant tank and if the fluid in the tester turns green, it is more then likely HGs. If no exhaust gas is present then it is probably the EGR cooler. If you get the EGR cooler replaced, be sure to rebuild the oil cooler or another EGR cooler will be in you near future.
Before I put studs in, I had a restricted oil and EGR cooler that was causing mine to puke. But I had no exhaust gas in the coolant tank. Six months later the puking got worse and I found a small amount of exhaust gas in the coolant. I elected to change the EGR cooler and install ARP studs but not to change the HGs since the amount of exhaust gas was so small. After the stud install, I still had some minor puking but no exhaust gas in the coolant. So I rebuilt the oil cooler. No more puking.
why would you think an egr cooler failing could be a cause of exhaust gas in the coolant bottle?
The egr cooler flows exhaust gas around the coolant ports in the cooler. so if you have a leak it would be pushing exhaust gas into the cooler wich has coolant in wich goes back to the coolant bottle.
that my thought process whats your?
and to the op you can use a cooling system pressure tester, a vacuum tester and a pvt to figure out what the issue is. also you would need to know the eot/ect split temps. You can also try to fill the cooling system and see if you have a concern at at all or if it was just a part of the maintace that was missed and never toped off.

i dont remember seeing mistabob2k7 post about exhaust gases in the recovery bottle, do you?.and mistabob2k7 if it is the cooler leaking you stand a really good chance of filling #7 with water and possibly hydro-locking the engine when you crank it to start it.if you crank it and it wont turn over you need to take #7 glow plug out and turn it over until all the water is out of that cylinder. the reason i, myself, think it's a cooler is my truck experienced the same problem, complete with #7 BEING FULL OF WATER. for your sake i hope that's what it is, because a delete kit is alot less expensive than hg's or injectors.pull the egr valve out and check for wetness on the valve assy. if its wet and it looks like fuel in the itake, or watered down carbon it's going to be an egr cooler. do yourself a huge favor and delete it a.s.a.p.
I need to bring it somewhere and see what the exact problem is before I do anything.. If it is the HG's i will do the complete delete and all that at once.. If I just need the delete I will be extremley happy but im going to need to figure somehting out quick!
I made an appointment with my local Ford dealer to have the truck gone through by their Diesel Tech. Im dropping it off Wednesday night and picking it up Thursday mid-day. I will keep everyone posted..
My dilema is that I already know there is some type of problem... If its the EGR cooler its going to be like $1500... If its the HG's its going to be like $4,000... I guess Im going to have to get with the dealer and see what the results are
can someone please explain to me the differences in EGR delete kits and the pro's and cons of each? Im seeing kits as low as $300 and as high as $900...
I want to do this right and do it once... I also need some insight on head gaskets, studs and if there are any kits out there that have everyting I will need to do it all.
My truck will be at the dealer Thursday and I want to be ready to order whatever will be needed as soon as I get the results..

The price difference is because some people are trying to rape you... Check out MKM Custom on ebay they are $300 for their delete kit
i returned the tune to stock and it does not smoke anymore BUT it runs VERY rough... So rough i dont feel right even driving it...... Why would taking the tune out do this?
well I just called the Ford Dealer. They told me they found #4 injector down and having issues when cold. They told me they are re-flashing the FICM and keeping the truck again aver night to see if its any better. If not im going to need an injector.
Would it be best to replace that 1 with a stock replacement (if need be) or is there an aftermarket set I can go with thats comparible or "better"
I will keep everyone posted on the EGR and HG things as well.

If you are only changing one injector you have to go with an OEM unit either new or refurbished. I believe the new OEM injectors are ~$300 ea and a refurbished ones are ~$150 ea.
