Been a while since I have had any issues but that has changed. I have a 95 PSD 5 spd with 130K and maintenance up to date. I started it about 2 weeks ago when it was -2F. Started hard but did start. Left it run about 30 minutes at idle. Went to move it and it stalled and wouldnt restart. It sat for ten days while we were on vacation. I put the truck in the warm shop when we got home to check things out. Fuel filter canister was full. There is no white smoke when cranking. Tach reads 200 rpm when cranking. I left the glow plugs cycle and time out and shot it with ether. Fired right up and backed it out of the shop. It ran about 5 minutes and shut down. I thought maybe CPS and put one in out of the 97. No change. It will fire off from ether but shut off after it burns the ether. I have two 97 PSD that I can try parts from for troubleshoot. It is stock except for exhaust and air intake. Thanks for any input.
1. Re-check fuel in canister since last start.
2. Check that oil level in HPOP reservoir is 1/2" from top.
3. If above two items are OK unplug ICP and see if it will start.
Check for oil in the
ICP connection when you pull it.
If you get it running try disconnecting the MAP sensor connection and see it the truck runs better/

Q Our trucks will run with the ICP pulled.
the PCM will default to an ICP reading of 700 PSI and use other inputs for IPR control
HPOP was full and the fuel filter canister had refilled after I drained it. Unplugged ICP and no start. I did get it running one time long enough to get it back inside the shop. It ran fine both times even though it ran for only 5 minutes until it shut down. Made the mistake of turning the key back to off one time while using ether. Remember now why I hate using ether!
I heard using ether was REALLY BAD for diesel motors ( too much combustion) ??? regular silicone spray is what someone said to use instead. Was I mis-informed??
Yes, I wait for the "wait to start" to be off and then another 20 seconds before I give it one small shot. It will fire off that little bit and then shut down. I have used WD40 as starting fluid for chain saws. I am only using a small amount of ether and with caution. There are so many different chemicals in different sprays that I would rather stick with straight starting fluid while it is in my closed shop. No plans for running it permanent on ether unless I cant find any other way! Haha. Still looking for input.
While the truck is running for the 5 minutes, I would check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the FPR. I really don't know of any way to check the pressure coming from the HPOP. Maybe someone could chime in on that one. How cold is it now??? Have you tried plugging in the block heater and letting it heat up good? If you have glow plug issues of course it would be hard to start, also I would check all the plugs going to the UVCH. Ohm out the glow plugs and see if any are bad and check the relay and see if it's working properly......
Doesnt run 2 seconds now. GPs are good. It has been in the 50F shop for 3 days now. I live off grid so using an engine heater is out. No white smoke at all when cranking.
Yea, I would say no fuel. I would try and put a pressure guage on it and see what kind of pressure you are getting while trying to crank. May just be a fuel pump....
