I am trying to figure out why the secondary’s on my Holly 4180 start leaking fuel with the butterflies closed whenever the truck drops to a slow idle. As soon as it does the truck keeps trying to flood out. When it does this, I can open the secondary butterflies just a bit and leans out the mixture and the engine revs up smoothes out and the leaking fuel stops... Until I let the secondary butterflies close, then the idle slows to normal, the fuel start leaking again and... Well you get the idea. I'm stumped.
It’s on my 84 F250 4X4 460ci 4 spd.<o></o>
Check the level of the secondary float and also check to see if the float is OK and isn't
gaslogged or has a leak. I run a 4180 on my 81 F100 and haven't had that problem.
If the carb hasn't been rebuilt in a long time it would be good to do it. If you do rebuild
it, use a Holley or Motorcraft carb kit.
Could be bad float, but I'd be more inclined to think it's needle/seat related. Either a bad needle/seat, or trash in it.
The only thing I like about holley carbs is the needle/seat assembly can be changed without carb disassembly.
