When I looked at installing an alarm with auto start the installer asked if i had 2 keys, I said yes and he said that was a good thing since with 2 keys they could install some kind of device to mimic my key. He told me to program the device he needed 2 keys.

i was reading to tape one of your keys on teh drivers side behind the dash and it supposed to work.. then you can use any old key. but it defeats the purpose of the security i think.

Taping a key to the underside of the dash is a bad idea. Anyone with the inclination, and a sturdy screwdriver, would be able to roll off with your X. The PATS system is a great feature IMO.

Hopefully the key you bought at Wal Mart has a transponder in it.You can take it to Ford, or a good locksmith, and they can program it to your truck. It's a small price to pay for the security it offers.

And BTW:The Miser Bros Rule!!

B-uno; If you have one key with a transponder it will cost you at least $80 to make second one. Some hardware stores and most lock shops can do it. You may as well throw that Walmart key away unless you hide it outside of the truck in case you need to get in (best idea).

I had a local locksmith delete a lost key from the system and cut/re-program a new key for $45. Shop around, you might find a deal.

Don't throw it away. If you have two workig PATS key's, you can just program that third key yourself.

I've posted these instructions quite a few times, but so you don't have to do a search, here they are again for ya!

Programming a PATS key:

1. Place first already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting the vehicle, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

2. Within 5 seconds, insert your second already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

3. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to OFF, insert the new key into the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

The theft indicator light should go on for three seconds, after which the key will start the vehicle. Repeat this process, from the beginning, for each new key to be programmed.

Well, you didn't tell me that part!

My local OSH started doing PATS key cutting and programming for $70 bucks, IIRC.

Call around, ya might get lucky and find someone to do it for not a lot of cash.

That's why I said throw it away or better idea; hide it somewhere to get in. Walmart is not got to give him a transponder. They probably don't have one in the whole 589,787,593,890 square foot store and wouldn't recognize one if they were looking at it.

Your kinda screwed, because you dont have that second key, but once you pay the high price for the 2nd key, do yourself a favor. Do like I did and go on e-bay, I got 2 blank pats keys for $15.00. Menards cut them for me free of charge. As far as the alarm goes. I bought a 05 excursion diesel in December. Last month, my dealer installed a prestige alarm with remote start. My pats system still works, and they didnt tape my key under the dash or anything like that. Unless you have a brand new 2010 that they havent come out with a bypass system for yet, your not going to loose your key.
