steering pump replacement

mines leaks like crazy, not sure if it just a line but its hard to tell without taking it out, so im just gonna put a new pump in, is there anything i should know or special tools i will need? and does the power steering fluid have to be bled, or pressurized in any way? is it a fairly simple job? thanks in advance, tim

you need the pulley remover/installer to swap pulleys. thats the only special tool you need it is pretty straightforward replacement.

Yep, rent the puller/installer from a parts store, and read its instructions! lol

Mine was pretty straightforward. You definitely want the pulley remover. I took my old pump to the local auto parts store, borrowed their pulley remover, and switched the pulley out in their parking lot. They loaned it to me for free and I didn't even buy the pump there!

Keep your old fill cap. My new pump didn't come with one.

Fill with fluid, turn wheels left and right a couple times, then refill with fluid.

A short drive with the front wheels cycled lock to lock a couple times and you will be good to go.

When you remove the pressure line, check the fitting on the end.
Some have a flare type fitting, some have an O ring type seal.

My 86 has the O ring type, all it needed was a new O ring to stop the leaks.
