I recently aquired a 73 F250 4x4 that I want away from the closed nuckle front axle. What years of trucks and make of trucks have a better axle that will fit? Also disk brakes would be nice but not a deal breaker.
A disc brake high pinion Dana 44 front should be easy to find & you will have a better drive shaft angle, they were in '77.5-'79. Low pinion 44hd fronts with the open knuckles '75?-'77 with disc brakes are getting harder to find but they are out there. If you don't have power brakes now would be the time to add them.
I could be wrong, but I believe the front axle was the same through the 1975 model year. 1976 was the first year of the open knuckle design, and the first year of front disc brakes on the Dana 44 6CF axle used in F-250 4x4's.
I don't think Ford used an open knuckle, drum brake front axle on the F-250.
Again, I'm not sure, but I believe if you do decide to convert to front disc brakes the proportioning valve is different, as is the master cylinder and power brake booster.
