i thought for a few minutes that my overdrive wouldnt turn off.....
but once i got her out on some open road i found out that its just the light in the shifter handle that illuminates the "OFF" when you have it disengaged..
has anyone repaired this before? would the whole lever need to be replaced ?
its not a huge PITA, but just want to get everything working properly
Not a pain at all, and fairly common. Dorman makes a replacement switch, part number 49299. I got mine at rockauto.com, but lots of places sell them. Pricing should be between 6-20 bucks depending on where you get it.
On mine, I used a small screwdriver to pop the old one out, and the new one snaps in place.
Before you go spend money on the switch, pull the steering column cover pieces and locate and inspect the wires from the OD cancel switch - they are somewhat poorly run in there, and they eventually get rubbed through and start causing all sorts of trouble. Every time I have a column apart for whatever reason, I always wrap the heck outta them little wires with electrical tape and/or heat-shrink, prevents the same damage from happening again in the foreseeable future.
