Need help with door locks

I'm switching to the pull type door locks from slide locks, and I need to drill the holes in the top of the door and door panel for the lock rod.I need some type of reference point from a truck that has the pull type locks.Would anybody mind taking some pics or getting me some measurements for the location of the holes?I would greatly appreciate it.

Now I know slide locks are rare and all,and they're unique to only a few years, but i'm sick of putting screws in the back of the slide lock piece, and i'm sick of it coming back apart when I pull off the door panel.Plus,I like the pull type style better. Thanks in advance.

Shaun

You mean you still have the sliders????
My truck had missing sliders when I bought it (well, they're in the glovebox). I just tell everyone those holes in the door panel are are cell phone holders, as I hook my belt clip cell phone holder into the one on the DS.............
Imagine that, Ford putting convenient cell phone holders in a truck built before the advent of the cell phone, particularly the small hand-held ones of today.

I've actually been thinking of building my own custom sliders. If I can get to this soon, I'll get pics and post up the results.
The idea has been floating around in my head for ~12 years, since the day I bought this truck. (Oct 2, 1997)

Hard to come by is right. Both of mine were in the glovebox when I bought it. Since they wouldn't go back in (and stay), I used them to hold down the reciept I got for the truck. They've managed that job quite well for over 12 years now............

Slide Locks.

1980 and 1981 before a build date of 12/80.

1981 with a build date of 12/80 and after and 1982-1986 have the pull type locks you want.

Dennis Carpenter has some of the slide lock controls, that they got from Ford, if you check them out. Colors vary.

The best way to drill the hole you need is to get a door panel for the pull type locks, put it on the door, stick a marker down the hole and mark the metal part of the door for the rod. You will need new door panels anyway as the gaping hole for the slide lock would be conspicuous. The Pull type lock door panels do not have the hole for the slide lock of course.

after the hole is drilled in the door shell, the mechanisims will swap easily.

I actually had a door panel in the shop from a buddy's 95 F150,I don't know why I never thought of it,but I ended up using that.Marked the hole and drilled it.Then Drilled through the slide-lock door panel temporarily til I get new door panels.

Now,for the mechanism part.I noticed that the 80-81 mechanism has two arms, one that the slide lock rod connects to,and another that I thought was for the vertical locks.I found it weird that the truck had it when they didn't use pull locks for this year.Anyways,I then thought that it might be for power locks or something.Am I right?I hooked the pull type lock rod up to this, and it works great, but insetad of having to push down the **** to lock the doors, you have to pull up.And vice versa to unlock the doors.I'm gonna head out to the junkyard this weekend and grab the mechanisms from an 82-86.I was in the process of grabbing some last time I was at the junkyard, but it started to pour,so I left.

That's a good question, I'll check my parts books and get back to you on it.

It's working the exact opposite it is supposed to work.

Alright I looked at the books, and there are two different lock cylinders.

One with a square key, and one with a round key.

That shouldn't matter.

The extra attachement on the lock is indeed for the Power lock option, as they also had a pull **** as well.

The only thing I can think of is the door lock rods are Left and Right side dependant. Did you get them backwards by mistake?

For use on 1981 and later on and after 12/80

I knew they were left and right dependent, made sure they went the right way too.

*Edit* I just went out and put the lock rod in the hole for the slide locks, and it doesn't work.So the mechanisms have to be different unless i'm missing something.

I believe the latch assembies are different between 80/81 and 82-86 (or beyond).
