There is a mod called "harpooning" the tanks, basically you replace the worthless rollover valve on top of the tank with a 90-degree barb fitting, then run a hose from there to the top of the filler on the fender or bed side, where you weld or braze on another barb fitting and you hook up the hose to that as well - this creates another path for venting air out of the tank when fuel is rushing in at full speed, we diesel folks usually do it so we can get rid of the inner hose in the filler setup and hog out the filler opening so it accepts the big-rig pumps, but I can see it helping out you gasser folks as well, as your pump shutoff issues are more than likely caused exactly from air not venting out quick enough to match the fuel flow from the pump.
I have a 94 f150 flareside. Does the same thing. I have only put fuel in the front tank as the back one leaks. Just sold a 95 f150 that would click off at 3/4. Then would have to keep backing the nozzle out to get if full. No idea what the problem is. Have not looked into it.
I think the issue has to do with the inner hose in the filler neck. It partially collapses I have heard.
99% of the time this IS the problem... the hoses are a pain for sure, the 5/8 or 3/4 (forget which) vent hose will get twisted, or will flatten out then the trouble starts.. I have cured several by replacing the inner hose...
my 95 styleside would do a very mild version of this on the rear tank. But the front one was much much worse, my 96 styleside doesn't do it at all. Texasguy might be right, because it seems sporadic and doesn't seem to be isolated to these trucks.
It never bothered my a whole lot though because I take forever to pump gas. I keep adding slow and rock my truck back and forth to get the air bubbles out. I love driving for 30 minutes and still seeing the needle on F.
