which mods are best?

Picking up a 1999 7.3 6 speed 4:10 75k miles next week.

what order should I add these three mods, can't really afford all at once.

Tuner/chip, air intake, larger exhaust.

I pull a 20' cargo trailer 10k lbs 50% of the time on highway.
Other 50% city driving

Looking for better gas milage & overall health for engine. I will not be hot rodding.

You need intake, exhaust and gauges first, then the tuner.

X2.....An EGT gauge is a must with a tuner. You have to monitor the exhaust gas temps so you don't FUBAR the pistons.

I did my tuner before the exhaust, as long as he has gauges he can monitor the EGTs. But then you're gonna want a WW because the tuner will cause turbo surge.

Installing an EGT Gauge I will do first no matter what.

Tuner vs Chip. Are they the same? I have a DP on my 6.0 which has been great. The F5/F6 chip from DP is it differant?

WHAT IS "WW" ?

Agree with the others, it should go like this.

Air, exhaust, gauges, tuner

And to stay cheap you can just straight pipe the exhaust first and get the 6637 for the air.

Seems like everyone pretty much covered it. The 6637 intake is cheap and does a great job.
All these mods can be bought from Clay at Riffraff. He can get you everything you will need for a great price (no need to shop around) plus you can't beat his customer service.

This one I'm getting has the small mirrors, maybe it's an early 99.

my 01 had small mirrors, so thats not really a way to tell if it's early or late. you have to look at the build date to confirm

like Bruce said, best way to tell early 99 is by build date. someone else might chime in with another way to tell.

BTW, Early 99 is December of 1998 and earlier, IIRC.

Lift the hood and count the bolts on the compressor housing on the turbo. Four bolts = early 99, five bolts = late 99+. Also, with a manual, you can control surge easier by down-shifting a gear. WW may still be needed though if it's a late 99, but not necessarily if you're okay with the down-shifting method.

Turbo Surge?

What's that like? Down shift to control it?

Please explain.
