Under-Bed Spare Tire Holder

I was bored at work today. I have everything caught up, so I decided to take care of some of the issues with my truck. The first one being the spare tire holder. I bought the truck a couple months ago and I have had my spare tire in my bed since then. I crawled underneath, removed the winch assembly (there was no wire rope on it) and took it to my bench. The winch assembly is riveted together so I drilled them out and found that the plastic spool (why use plastic?) that holds the wire rope is broken. So I looked around for something I could substitue and couldn't find anything. So since I am the fleet mechanic for a strutual steel outfit, I thought maybe I could drag a welder over and make something. I think I almost have it figured out and back together, so hopefully tomorrow I will have a functioning spare tire winch again, wish me luck!!!!!!

That plastic wheel in there has been the bane of many of us. Post pics of the fix you come up with!

Sounds cool. Be sure to post up some pics of what you come up with.

Good Luck!

On my 1995 F-150 the spare tire holder was a bar under the bed that held the spare tire. The tire was secured to the bar with a threaded rod and a large plastic cone. The cone was threaded in the middle and centered the spare tire as it was tightened. It broke while wheelin' the truck in deep sand.

I went to a truck salvage yard and got a spare tire holder from an older truck that had all metal parts and retrofitted it to my newer truck.

I actually thought of that, but since I am cheap and the misc. pieces are laying around (free) the shop I decided to tear into it. Well I got it cobbled together this morning, not really happy with the way it looks but it is hidden anyways, but it does work. The plasma cutter and punches were all being used today so I had to use a cut-off tool to make my cuts, I cut two pieces of perforated plate and used a piece of 1/2" conduit in between them to make a new spool. I then welded the spool assembly together. Once it was together I welded the spool assemby to the metal gear that the plastic spool went on. I then welded a steel cable to the spool and put it all back together. I also took this time to remove the key portion of the crank assembly as I didn't have the key anyways. It works great now my tire is back under the bed where it belongs. In total I bet I have maybe 10.00 in pieces tied up in this fix.
You can see the pictures in my album since I can't figure out how to get them in the post

just a thought here - I know not everyone would want the spare tire in the bed (but then again not everyone wants to crawl around in the mud or snow to get one out from under a buried truck either). Valley makes an in-bed carrier that mounts to the inside of the bed-wall. It holds the tire upright out of the way and can be padlocked. I used to have one on my old 1986 F-150 and really loved it. It wasn't expensive. A quick web search shows a part number 75340 and it looks like there are lots of places to find one. Though I doubt anybody could beat your $10 price-tag, Red. ha!

I could, but I would need your assembly to get the gear out of, as I used the original gear that is in the assembly. PM me if interested (I see you are in texas)

On a side note, a coworker had his spare stolen from his F150. They just cut the cable on the winch. That special spare key doesn't do much good when they cut the cable. I suppose one could put a chain and lock on it but if they cut the cable, they can just cut the chain too.

When I bought my 86 flareside last August there was no spare and the mount was missing. i have finally found a nice steel rim but haven't been able to locate the mounting channel , the spare holder or the eye and J bolts. I found some of these parts at LMC truck but they state the channel is used only on the rear mounted gas tank model, mine has the under cab side mount tank. I can't see why the rear mount would be any different except for longer bolts. The holes are in the rear of the frame for mounting but I don't want to order the channel not knowing if it will fit. Does anyone know the Ford P/n of the channel and bolts and where I can get them? Thanks, Barry

Have you thought of using the spool from a cable come along to replace the plastic part?
My tire carrier works flawlessly, and I have never had the cable assembly apart on one of these before , so my knowledge is null.
