New project for spare

Since I am waiting on my new wheels to come, I started looking at using one of the factory wheels and buying a used 35 tire for a spare. I began to look at the cheap cable system Ford uses and always wondered what would happen one day if the cable breaks. What a supprise for someong riding behind me. Anyway, years ago my dad had a Ford ranger that had a tubular caged frame underneath that hinged down to lower the spare. It was much easier to unload and load than the current settup of cranking with the POS spare tire key. When I get my design built and functioning, maybe I will post some pictures.

I don't know if I'd bother. I've had my truck 3 1/2 yrs and I've had the spare down twice. One for easier access to the shocks I was replacing and another time to re-route the trailer harness wire since it was chafing. I don't think I've ever heard of someone losing a spare.

I recently had mine down to access running new reverse lights and noticed the cable was severly rusted and didn't want to go back up very well. Not a very big cable for a lot of weight.

I cranked mine down, and when I was trying to get it back up it wouldn't move... the crappy cable came apart and jammed the winch mechanism... $95 later with a new crank, I'd love to see a better design for that!

My '89 had the "drop down" type assembly on it and it was great. Only bad part was getting on the ground under the truck to lower it. Other than that, it was super secure. Subscibing... looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Good luck.

UPDATE...I got a used 315/75/16 today from a used tire store for $20. They were going out of business so they had already sold their tire equipment. So I used another tire store to have it mounted for $10. Got home and installed the new spare and started working on the tire carrier. I'm almost finished with it. All that is left is painting it. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow before I install it.

You would be surprised at what that cable can support as far as weight goes. My winch has 3/8" cable and my winch can be double lined for 18,000#

I would be interested to see what you come up with for the carrier. I never cared for the older style carrier, this one has not been a problem for me, but I know of 2 people that had to have the assembly replaced due to corrosion or dirt stuck inside.

Older trucks like my Dad's always had the spare mounted in the bed of the truck. Only reason they moved it was for space. But that is a idea as well.

The tensel strength of a 3/8" cable is pretty strong....until the individual strands start to break from rust. Just don't know how long it would stand up to the weight of the larger spare. I'm doing this to supplement the cable's job and keep the spare in its place if and when it does finally break.

I lost the spare from a chevy once. The tire fell out and got edgeways making the back of the truck jump up and then all of the racket from dragging the carrier scared the heck out of me. I didn't know what the heck had happened until I pulled over. I then went back down the road and collected my tire. It was on a country road and I was going fairly slow. I don't want to think about that happening while traveling at interstate speeds.

Here is the carrier painted and drying.

Here it is mounted in the down position. Spare is still being held by 1/8" cable.

There is not much underneath the truck to attach to so I drilled through the bed at the cross member and used two long bolts that the two pieces of chain hook to with a nut and lock nut. This is where it pivots.
